Holding the flame at set opener, Midtfyns Festival, Odense, Denmark 1995.
Playing a shorter set, because it was a festival, Bon Jovi was on fire beginning to end.
Welcome to another day on this new daily blog! Every day you get:
(1) a story
Ranging from anywhere between
– a 2000 word blogpost, lavishly wrapped under, over and around, all things yoga and Bon Jovi;
– to refreshingly missing!
Today’s story is about the concert Bon Jovi gave in Denmark, 1995;
About a Dutch artist Raven van Dorst;
And about the nature of being creative, and its disruptive powers on the rest of the world (or your life).
As always, the story is the closer, at the bottom of this post.
You also as always get:
(2) a Bon Jovi concert, a soundtrack for today
Also added to the on-this-day playlist, with all the concerts from this blog:

👩🏼💻 the story July 8
.
Two days ago I wrote a piece about the Dutch preference for organizing festivals, over one-band concerts.
I still think this is largely an unconscious bias that goes something like this:
Solo artist = one artist = concert alone
Band = multiple artists = festival
However, today’s soundtrack, the Bon Jovi festival recording, proves that being programmed at a festival, can result in extra powerful performances!
At the 1995 Bon Jovi Cross Road tour, there was a stint where they played three different countries in three days:
July 6, 1995, Rotterdam The Netherlands
July 7, 1995, Odense, Denmark, festival
snippet press conference Denmark, credit Jane
July 8, 1995, Turku, Finland (no recording)
snippet press moment Finland, credit Jane
[ After Finland there are 13 days off, American leg starts July 21 1995 ]
It was as if despite the grueling schedule, the festival setting, and consequently having to cut the setlist short by 45 minutes or so, resulted in an extra shot of adrenaline and inspiration!
In my opinion, the Denmark performance definitely belongs to the strongest of the tour.
The show opens with a powerful statement of Jon carrying a torch during “Rockin’ In The Free World”;
Jon Bon Jovi flirts with the audience mid-Lay Your Hands On Me:
“With some of these girls I see out here, I wouldn’t mind spending a couple of nights here in the tent myself. “
There is flirting and storytelling in an exceptionally energetic Bad Medicine, with him turning to “Gloria” (the song is integrated into Bad Medicine) because he had been away from New Jersey for too long.
And Gloria understanding that blackmail is the fastest way to a man’s heart!
And the encore rocks!
There is an enigmatic version of I Believe, with Jon Bon Jovi on electric guitar and with adlibs (extra words) and raspy voice in the outro, of Bruce Springsteen like proportions!
There is minutes of speech/ adlibs in the slow pause in Someday I ll Be Saturday Night!
You can usually find timestamps to different songs (f.e. to Bad Medicine) in every description box on YouTube:

I’m not eating my words on the blog about concerts versus festivals,
but I will add, that if it had not been for Bon Jovi pulling out all the stops, for this Danish festival;
We would have been one great concert short!
This blog is almost one month old, and from every day I sat down to write, today has been the most problematic one.
Because I had not even properly started, or I saw the announcement that Dutch artist Raven van Dorst would be a guest in a legendary Dutch summer series, on television.
The show is called “Zomergasten” and it has been around since 1988.
Zomergasten is like the royalty of Dutch television.
Every episode, one guest can create their ideal television night, in a live 4-hour show.
There is a rudimentary English version of the wiki page of this show, where only the most remarkable Dutch scientists, artists and people from the media are invited.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zomergasten
Being invited to Zomergasten is a form of being knighted.

About two months ago, I got to know Raven van Dorst, because one episode of their current program (where they have a farm, and every week two famous Dutch people come to help) was heavily promoted by other Dutch media, because it had two interesting guests in it.
So I watched the show for the first time, because one of those guests indeed interested me;
Only to find out very quickly, that no one is very interesting, standing next to Raven!
Raven van Dorst is simply so badass, so authentic, so funny and (my personal favorite) so openly sexual, that no matter how much media training you had, no matter how much you usually get paid to show up on camera;
You will lose standing next to them.
No one outshines Raven.
Raven van Dorst has been a performer since approximately 2000;
And although their bands and identities have been subject to change, the music was always rock, punk rock and doom metal, and they performed at festivals and gave concerts all over Europe.
Don’t let ten years of being in television fool you;
Raven van Dorst is first and foremost a band leader and a seasoned rock musician.
I immersed into their content, watched all seasons of their farming show, and then discovered ten years plus, worth of material on YouTube.
Because Raven had been active as a content creator for tv, for almost ten years, and even longer as a recording artist.
I remember having ten days or something, where my whole world seemed to revolve around watching their content and around creating a playlist I “knew” only I would listen to.
Ten days, which I considered something between an artist’s sabbatical and collateral damage of being a creative.
Productivity wise I gave myself a zero for that time period, but at the same time I knew that when you are a creative, you have to settle for not being productive in the traditional sense.
That when the muse takes over, you bow.
You honor that.
As Freddie Mercury says in the movie Bohemian Rhapsody:
“I m a performer darling, not a Swiss train conductor.”
So although I m still not at ease, with how creative energy flows;
I respected it.
My ten days or so, immersing myself in Raven van Dorst’s work, and creating the playlist, was just one of the many proof I had, that creativity is not a linear process.
And now we get to why today was the most difficult day for me, writing this Daily Bon Jovi Yoga blog;
Because I HAVE been trying to contain this.
To streamline it, in a way that some day in the hopefully, not too far away future, I can:
-write this blog in under an hour AM
-set up the draft post of the new day (research concerts on-this-day; select soundtrack concert, get direct yoga links and upload photos to the yoga videos, change all the dates) every night, in 30 minutes;
So that I can create these posts in 90 minutes and get going with my other work.
But it’s not working.
These post are still more often than not 4-8 hours long, because the creative trail takes me all over the place.
When I heard this news about Raven van Dorst, being “knighted” to Zomergast (summer guest), I looked up the playlist I had created all those weeks ago, and started structuring it in a way that it could be made public.
And I wrote an introduction in English, to Raven van Dorst, in the description box. Wrestling with they/them, and how to use verbs in a non-binary way.
For those who want to know:
In English you use plural:
Raven van Dorst is, but they are.
In Dutch you use singular:
Raven van Dorst is, and hun is.
I also included a paragraph in the description box about why they are non-binary, and why they are an activist.
Realizing that I could still have chosen wrong terms or words.
I was simultaneously working on not one, but three pieces of content:
-this blogpost
-the YouTube playlist and the description box
and
-a Dutch blogpost (which will have to wait, or be dropped)
And I m now almost at 7 hours of work, and only the playlist is done.
playlist: Raven van Dorst, Dutch artist they/them
In the first song at the show in Denmark, Jon Bon Jovi is carrying a torch.
According to the concert page, he puts it down after nearly burning his arm, but it does make a spectacular visual.
Jon Bon Jovi holding the torch for freedom.
The same freedom, Raven van Dorst advocates.
At the Dutch program page, announcing Raven van Dorst attending Zomergasten this year, they announce it will be an evening in praise of the rebel.
A celebration of being different.
And I wonder: “Will they….? Even there?”
Will Raven van Dorst bring their unapologetic sexuality, “straight” into their unofficial Dutch knighting, live on national tv?
Will they enter wearing sunglasses carrying a torch, climb the table like a high rise, and pose like the statue of liberty, dramatically staring into the lens?
Will they extinguish the torch in the crystal carafe of water, grab an electric guitar for an energetic performance, blowing all the fuses?
Throw in lengthy and very unscripted adlibs that will make us all blush and give guests for the next 34 years of the show something to live up to?
Or, do the rock stars of this world, save THAT for festivals?
