The music of a generation. And the next. | Bon Jovi 1995 09 02 | concert for the opening Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame

New remaster Bon Jovi 2 September 1995 Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame opening Cleveland 🇺🇸 pro-shot video 🏟️ off-tour 1995  🎛️🎶🎧-> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xP6DclEnwYU Uploaded by hAnD90 on 3 November 2023 This blog: 1. The music of a generation. And the next.

👩🏼‍💻 the story 18 November 2023

. The performance consisted of 3 songs. 1. With A Little Help From My Friends [0:00] 2. It’s My Life / We Gotta Got Out Of This Place  [7:23] with Eric Burdon from The Animals 3. Imagine / Give Peace A Chance  [14:13] acoustic Richie and Jon On the 2nd of September 1995, Bon Jovi played at an all-star concert organized to celebrate the opening of the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Bon Jovi squeezed this show in between a concert in Syracuse on September 1st, and Toronto September 3rd, of Bon Jovi’s Crossroad/These Days Tour; An era that a majority of the fans would consider to be Bon Jovi’s prime. 1995’s These Days album had brought the band critical acclaim, and in particular in Europe their fanbase had solidified bringing in music lovers who had previously ignored the band, mainly due to its popularity with girls and women. But in 1995, even the harshest of critics had noticed that not only had Bon Jovi survived the hair metal era of the 80s; They were now thriving in a 90s grunge landscape. That Bon Jovi never looked sharper, than this tour where they stuck to all-black outfits, did not hurt their case. With the train of their worldwide tour rolling full steam ahead, Bon Jovi were at their peak, the moment they stepped on a circle shaped platter the size of the stage, that would rotate four of the five bandmembers of Bon Jovi, plus guitarists G.E. Smith (Hall & Oates) and Steve Cropper and drummer Jim Keltner, in front of the 82.000 big crowd that had gathered in Municipal Stadium in Cleveland. A questionable and lukewarm choice to make an entry, in an industry that has never shunned away from live fireworks on stage. The entry reminded me of a Dutch/Asian inspired buffet called “a rice table”, where we have rotating platters on the middle of the table, to provide easy access to the dishes. The musicians being brought in on a rice platter was worsened by the fact that Jon Bon Jovi did not have to be on the rice platter. Apparently, there was a level where you no longer had to agree to being brought in on a rice platter, just that the others didn’t make the cut. However, judging from the video, no one seemed to be too bothered with it, and the three songs show us Bon Jovi at their absolute peak. Their performance is proof why this year’s concerts would go down as their best. And may even find you reconsidering the option of sticking to a full-black wardrobe. However, the viewpoint that 95/96 had Bon Jovi at their peak, is not an undisputed one! Many fans will always prefer the rawness of 80s Bon Jovi, or point out the perfect mix of raw versus professionalism, of their 1993 tour and 1992’s An Evening With Bon Jovi. At the Rock n Hall Fall of Fame concert in 1995, all performers played only coversongs, and Bon Jovi’s choice fell back on 1992’s An Evening With Bon Jovi where they had thoroughly investigated, studied and rehearsed a whole series of cover songs, which would be woven into the evening which was a show on MTV, to promote their album Keep the Faith. But what the Evening with Bon Jovi performance had really done, was that it had been the first time, and perhaps the only time, where they had successfully crossed the line from pop or rock music, to art. An Evening With Bon Jovi, and the seriousness they had approached this project with including endless rehearsals, had in many ways cracked open the restrictive mold where 80s rock n’roll had kept them stuck in. After that; They were free. Both With a Little Help From My Friends as well as The Animal song It’s My Life/Got to get out of this place, are being played on both occasions: An evening with Bon Jovi October 1992, as well as this performance in Cleveland, in 1995. And for this occasion, Eric Burdon from the Animals joins Jon Bon Jovi on stage. They close their small set of covers with an acoustic version of Imagine/ Give Peace a Chance, Richie and Jon side by side with acoustic guitars, in the spirit of their legendary 1989 acoustic performance of Livin’on a Prayer and Wanted Dead or Alive (the one that sparked MTV’s Unplugged series). Jon dedicates the song to his musical influences and remembers how his mother would tell him to investigate the musicians who influenced the musicians you admire. Pointing him to the fact that music is legacy that is being handed down from one generation to the next. In 1995 Eric Burton was the older generation, at 54 years old. Younger than Jon Bon Jovi is today. But the cover songs that were chosen that day, as well as the ones Bon Jovi played in An Evening With Bon Jovi, remain relevant as ever. And over time, Bon Jovi songs have become those Rock n’Roll songs you would now choose, if a to be opened Hall of Fame would ask you to cover songs that changed the course of rock n’roll history. Bon Jovi became the legend behind the legends of today. The influence behind the influence. Many young people, tracing back the musical roots of their idols, will stumble upon Bon Jovi. Even in 2023, music is still handed down, from one generation to the next. Just like that one night in 1995, in Cleveland Ohio.

The foe of video

🧘🏼‍♀️ the (lack of) #dailybonjoviyoga to rock n’roll hall of Fame, 2 sept 1995

. The blog you’re reading right now, has had multiple course corrects over the past year. And its most recent iteration “is” or more accurately “should be”, (1) to listen to a new upload on the hAnD90 channel of a before 1997 Bon Jovi recording, while (2) doing yoga/ developing what will ultimately become Rock Star Yoga and then (3) to write a blogpost about both this new recording, like a review to a concert, and mention the yoga that was done to it. So reviews like the one you just read above, would be written after listening to the concert while doing yoga. Another time-consuming-and-often-not-done-activity, just like listening to Bon Jovi concerts Combining listening to the new uploads with doing yoga, would be the proverbial killing of two birds with one stone. “Why would anyone in their right mind want to kill two birds?” a question on top of anyone’s mind hearing this saying, but let’s not get into that. I could already see a glorious future for myself, both as a Bon Jovi connaisseur, where every recording would initiate me into deeper levels of knowledge! As well as forecast both a physical transformation and a rise in my professional status of Rock Star Yoga Teacher. This was about the megalomaniac point where reality stepped in. And it wasn’t even an unforeseen jolt of divine intervention, nor did the struggle come at some point far along the road, where things had gotten incredibly complex. No, it was an old foe, rearing its head, and throwing my super efficient plan straight into the trash bin!

-> THE VIDEO RECORDING <-

On a related matter, I also have a series waiting for me to be picked up, on my YouTube channel, that was brought to a halt two years ago. It are reviews about Bon Jovi 1995-1996 concerts. And although I have claimed I will be picking it up, the reason I still haven’t done that and my courage just sinks every time I realize which video I want to start at, and I don’t even start… Instead I get completely discouraged. The concert I want to start and reboot that series with, is Wembley 1995 first night, a 3 hour video registration. This was the final concert I reviewed 2 years ago, and I want to reboot the series, starting with another review of that. The double reviews would mark the two year hiatus in the series. Which maybe would have worked, if it had not been for the fact this review was to cover a video, not just an audio, of a concert. And videos have been my Achilles heel right from the moment I started that series! It is just very difficult to fit in hours of video watching. Where concert audios can be listened to while cleaning the house or doing yoga; Videos demand that you stay present. So unless I learn how to “deal” with videos, neither this current blog series of reviews of new uploads (that you’re reading right now), nor my video series on YouTube about 1995-1996 concerts, will be going anywhere! Which does not mean that the audio listening and its writing review process is flawless; Far from. This blog actually contains TWO drafts (unpublished posts), two concerts to which I already listened, made a Canva illustration for, setup the blogpost, included all the links, wrote out my yoga session, wrote a blogpost or at least a partial one- And then abandoned it. So obviously, I still have a lot to learn if I ever want the combined review/yoga series on this blog to roll, instead of to perish away in the graveyard that is my draft folder. But with audio I know that ultimately, I will find a way to hack it. I just listen to it again, while doing my finances or something, and finish the blogpost. But with video? I’m nowhere! And when I dived into the hAnD90 channel to see which upload would be the first to do yoga to, and write a review about, I saw it was this 20 minute video. So I couldn’t do yoga with it. I watched it without doing yoga, just with a notebook present. For someone (me) who has had a 3 hour Wembley 1995 video hanging over her head as a big “should do” for half a year now, doing one video of Bon Jovi on the Rock n Roll hall of fame music hall opening concert, for 20 minutes straight, was extremely doable. And what I learned watching this gorgeous recording of 1995 Bon Jovi! Was something that brought me closer to solving the puzzle of how in the world I am ever going to turn into a consistent Bon Jovi blogger, if I get delayed by video registrations. Delayed for weeks to years even, considering my meager video production. And this lesson was: Do it for the beauty. Be grateful these gorgeous video registrations exist! 20th century Bon Jovi on video is by far, the most interesting, breathtaking, profound work of art I personally know. And although few will agree: None have to. It is MY preferred art form. It is what I, value most. Which is the reason I chose this work of reviewing them. So despite still not knowing how I will find the time to watch concerts that have a video registration, I will never call them a foe, or curse them again for not being able to fit into a multi-task schedule. From now on, when I stumble upon a 20th century Bon Jovi on video, next up for a review, it is no longer a curse. It is a blessing of the highest kind.

Wind of Change | update for this website | Hell Night a.k.a opening night of the New Jersey Tour

Photo: Me (Suzanne Beenackers) on a very stormy day in Scheveningen, the Netherlands. 2023 10 28
Tonight it is Halloween, or Samhain which is old year’s eve in pagan religions. But I remember it mostly because of Hell Night in the movie the Crow. Although technically Hell Night is on the 30th not the 31st of October. But now I also remember the 31st of October because I was pulled even deeper into Bon Jovi’s history after last night’s upload on YouTube; 31 October 1988. Bon Jovi’s disastrous opening night of the New Jersey Syndicate Tour in Dublin, Ireland. After 35 years we can finally listen to it; -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WIxdPC_H4o “Bon Jovi | 1st Night at RDS Simmonscourt | Start of NJ Tour | 🎃 Halloween Audio 🎃| Dublin 1988” The night ended up in their tour documentary Access All Areas, with their behind-the-scenes anger and disappointment after the show, sliced in with footage from “raving fans outside”, after the show. The quotation marks stand for a contradiction pointed out in one of the comments to last night’s upload; That the fans raving outside had Scottish accents. The sliced in footage was actually footage from after the Glasgow shows on December 2 and 3. If there were raving fans in Dublin, they had not been caught on celluloid. Back to the movie The Crow; Hell Night or Devil’s Night was an existing name throughout the 70s through the 90s, for the night before Halloween. In the movie they may have taken it a few steps further, turning it into a night where gangs ruled the streets. But the unthinkable happend and Brandon Lee, son of Bruce Lee, was killed on set, with live fire coming from a gun. And now back to the changes I’m making: I didn’t plan for them to be on Halloween; But there is something fitting for me, to do it on such a dark night. After all, it was the “light” in the yoga world, the friendliness and softness, or sometimes just the pretending of it, that had slowed me down, derailed me, and ultimately; Stopped me from being a yoga teacher. It is pouring rain outside, currently. Just like in the movie The Crow. It is dark outside and I’m in the middle of a workweek so full, I have no idea how I will get everything done. And yet I feel more alive in my work, than I ever did in my first yoga career. Oh yes, this Halloween night, to announce the change on this website is just perfect. So in short, this is what will change: In 2022-2023 I made two playlists, collecting all Bon Jovi concerts and uploads on YouTube from their concerts 1984-1996 And I want to keep these lists updated, with new additions on YouTube like first night Dublin 1988. Preferably, I want to listen to the recordings and say something original about them or even write a review. I don’t just want to add them to the list.  These stories about new uploads and additions to the list, is what you have been getting from me lately. But I want to get back to what this site is named: I want this blog to also be, about Daily Bon Jovi Yoga! So, as far as this website goes, what will change is that I will listen to the recording while doing yoga, and will write about the yoga and use the hashtag #dailybonjoviyoga on my Canva posts (those square photos with letters) The content of all the blogs you will receive (if you’re subscribed to this channel) will stay largely the same; But the Canva will look different, including the hashtag #dailybonjoviyoga and the post will contain an extra paragraph about yoga. The second change is about my commercial offerings, which you will see if you follow me on social media. I will actively start offering private yoga classes & private yoga workshops here in Nijmegen, but they will move from my local company “De Club” to my international company “Catacombe”. This means that they move from the Dutch domain, to the English speaking one, and that you will start seeing them. As I said: Mainly on social media. This website, Daily Bon Jovi Yoga, is one of my writer’s site, it is not a business site. But it is possible you will start seeing the Catacombe yoga offerings, as I gradually move them from my Dutch company to my English one. In the film Brandon Lee plays a rock star who is murdered together with his girlfriend. He comes back as a supernatural avenger, who flies away in the shape of a crow. After Brandon’s death, the movie was finished with digital technology as well as a different actor in the role as a body double.  And for the movie Access All Areas, the Dublin/Glasgow mix-up is not the only time it takes liberties with the truth.   For a documentary, it is surprisingly inaccurate. If there is a lesson about the days we are in right now, to be learned from the movie Crow, a movie about 30 October Hell Night, and the mighty New Jersey Syndicate Tour starting Dublin 31 October 1988, it is that what starts around Halloween when the veil between the worlds of the spirits and the living is the thinnest; Is unpredictable, violent, epic, mythical. It is beyond the realm of reason, a place where storytelling takes over. ~Suzanne

Once upon a time, off-tour in Somerville, New Jersey 1988 | Bon Jovi 1988 10 15 | Only recording warm-up club tour

Unique recording  Bon Jovi 15 October 1988 Somerville, New Jersey 🏟️ warm-up for New Jersey Syndicate Tour 🎛️🎶🎧-> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPmfEXYejvg On July 10th 2020, the hAnD90 channel uploaded a remastered audio of a Bon Jovi concert that up until that point had only been available being wrongly labeled, as the band’s New Jersey album premiere at the Roseland Ballroom in New York, in September. It had also been completely unlistenable. Summer 2020 hAnD90 fixed both ailments, by adding it to his channel remastered, reworked and AI reconstructed if needed; And provided with the correct specs and labels. Yet from June 2022 to June 2023, when I created my playlists with all pre-1997 Bon Jovi recordings I could get my hands on, I had not included the October concert, not even in a wrongly labeled version. This is because of a simple reason: Although tour lists are provided by multiple sources (for example Google “New Jersey Tour Wikipedia”) pre-tour schedules are the work of specialists. Specialists, of which we have very few. And the only one I know, is the site BJ tours, and they have not covered the New Jersey Tour yet. At the time of writing this post, October 2023, their page New Jersey Syndicate Tour covers the first leg of the New Jersey Syndicate tour (Europe 1988), but nothing prior to that and nothing of the 14 months of concerts that would come after; Starting with Japan 31 December 1988 all the way up to the two shows (afternoon and evening) in Guadalajara, Mexico on the 17th of February 1990. In fact, for the site’s last finished project/ fully mapped out Keep the Faith Tour 1993, the pre-tour/ off-tour section has not been created yet either. And for good reason. My estimate is that creating one pre-tour/off-tour page, is about the same amount of work as covering an entire tour, including deciphering wrongly labeled locations. The latter being a hiccup that can occur due to an astonishing variety of reasons. The two most common reasons for wrongly labeled shows, are Jon calling out the biggest city nearby, instead of the actual name of the area the venue is at. Or it can be caused by the band visiting the same city twice in a year, and the bootlegs getting wrongly labeled as a result of it. But even untangling that is relatively easy, compared to researching off-tour concerts. The September/October mix up of the Somerville (Raritan Manor) recording, is due to the entire pre-tour period being poorly documented, and cannot be blamed on the same reasons as regular concert mix-ups can. And I will definitely not be the only one, who missed this entire section of this tour. Whatever Bon Jovi did off-tour, between the New Jersey album release party on the 19th of August 1988, and the first official concert on the 31st of October; We may never fully know. Although the hAnD90 description box indicates September’s unrecorded Roseland Ballroom gig, was one with all the balls and whistles!

“where the venue was filled with both fan club members and press, the whole room was decorated like a beach with bikini waitresses, bars, sand and everything there was to it”

source: description box from the 15 October 1988 concert

So although the list of concerts I have missed in my first 2022-2023 round of creating playlists, will probably have no end to it; In this case? The reason I missed Somerville (Raritan Manor), was an obvious one! It’s undocumented, meaning it doesn’t/didn’t show up on any of the lists I printed. 80s Bon Jovi off-tour concerts are quite simply uncharted territory. Off-tour concerts in general are notoriously poorly documented, and the BJ website has done an amazing job including those sections, on all tours 1995 and up To create a 1992-1993 off-tour list for the Keep the Faith Tour, but in particular getting an off-tour record for the even older tours like the New Jersey Syndicate Tour 1988-1990, is going to require obscene amounts of resources from the most dedicated fans, working together completing this puzzle. I would say it is unsure if all of them will ever see the light of day. But having said that, the Somerville (Raritan Manor) gig does illustrate, why these are really the diamonds in the rough, of 80s Bon Jovi fandom.

Once upon a time, off-tour in Somerville, New Jersey 1988

👩🏼‍💻 the story 16 October 2023

15 October 1988 Somerville (Raritan Manor), New Jersey 🎛️🎶🎧-> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPmfEXYejvg

. We hear Bon Jovi opening with the cover Helter Skelter, which they would keep on the setlist until the These Days Tour in the 90s. Next up is the tried and tested party starter Wild In The Streets (Slippery When Wet album, 1986), but not before Jon has welcomed the crowd, including the legendary words:

“This (night) is a little preview of the New Jersey Syndicate Tour.”

Third is their breakthrough hit Runaway (1983), which although definitely no-frills, still stands out for its quality. In the early 90s they would outgrow the song but at this point they can still make it work, although no doubt not without effort. Then they go straight into the first song from the new album New Jersey , Homebound Train, which Jon introduces by:

“Want to go for a ride? Want to go for a ride with me? How about I take you home.”

Homebound Train follows, a song that would become a staple on the setlists of this tour, yet it was dropped after the Jersey Syndicate era. Homebound Train opens with the characteristic haunting intro; Richie’s howling guitar, Jon playing harmonica, and singing in a slow, sulky  way. Until there is a “Woo, woo!”, mimicking the sound of a train, and the fast-paced new song kicks in. Then it is, to quote Jon, “audience participation time”, where the crowd is offered the opportunity to sing You Give Love a Bad Name, but doesn’t know the first verse. At which it is unceremoniously skipped, and Jon picks it up and leads the way, from the first chorus and up. “As you may or may not have heard by now, we have a brand new album out, and it’s called New Jersey. And the rest of the world is just trying to understand why in the world I named this album New Jersey. Well, I guess they just have to come here, and find out.” The concert was played in Somerville, New Jersey, and with the new album being called New Jersey, Jon Bon Jovi could of course not NOT mention its name! The New Jersey album was released one month before this concert, so people could know the songs, if they had bought it. “This is something of the new album,” Jon Bon Jovi says before the upbeat Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na of Born to be my Baby sets in! Another staple for the setlist, although unlike Homebound Train this one  would become a single and an evergreen. Born to be my Baby, with Jon chipping in with harmonica at the end of the song, has been played up until the end of the final months of the This House Is Not For Sale Tour (2019). Raritan Manor 1988, was one of the first times it was ever played live. Wanted Dead or Alive, opens with Richie Sambora solo on guitar. Although catchy and captivating, as Sambora would always manage to make these guitar songs, in this case it seems more like a filler in a bit of a low, unorchestrated moment of the show, than the strong intentional guitar song it is without fail, on a regular tour. Wanted Dead or Alive is performed acoustically, and the latter half in the album version, which gives it a best-of-both aura. Without missing a beat, the drums move into Living In Sin, another one from the New Jersey album. And what a song it would be! The song would end up being slowed down, dragged out, toyed with and lived through. It would become a center piece, the most intense song of a New Jersey Syndicate Tour show! You can already hear Jon improvising in the melody, screaming, and adding lyrics to this song, here in one of its very first renditions. Blood On Blood is played (new from the New Jersey album) and Bad Medicine (Slippery album 1986) These final two songs are cut-in, so incomplete, and we don’t know how many more songs were played that night in Somerville, New Jersey. But we do know what would follow: 16 months of touring the world, 31st October 1988 in Dublin, all the way to Guadalajara, Mexico on the 17th of February 1990. The wheels of New Jersey Syndicate Tour where already spinning, rolling, and rumbling, underneath the songs. And no one, would be going home for a very, very long time.

Newly added

Bon Jovi’s pre-tour concert of 15 October 1988, in Somerville (Raritan Manor) New Jersey, has been added to: New in Bon Jovi concerts before 1997 And to the playlist: “Part I: Bon Jovi concerts on this day 10 June – 5 December (before 1997) https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiGoDE3C06ScAo9UN4GyhtQWYfl3d6jMT” at October 15.

An already perfectly reviewed final night in Japan 1993 | Bon Jovi 1993 06 17 | New remaster on YouTube

New remaster  Bon Jovi 17 June 1993 Yokohama, Japan 🇯🇵 🏟️ Keep the Faith Tour 🎛️🎶🎧-> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6cZ-Gioopo Last Saturday, on 7 October 2023, the hAnD90 channel uploaded a remastered audio of  Bon Jovi’s final concert of the Japanese leg of the tour. I have no idea if the channel aspires to one day have the whole catalog of Bon Jovi concerts up there – an idea which would have any casual to diehard Bon Jovi fan scream with excitement! Or at least one of them ;)- but even if that is not the case and we’re just left here hanging about what will and what will not ultimately be up there, even then? Wow. And I mean Wow in the most intense, happy, Hell Yes way! What. A. Treat. What. A. Show. And with the context provided in the description box getting more detailed with every upload, what could a writer like me possibly have to add? Nothing, in all probability. Oh well, maybe a few time-stamps! And make myself useful. from the description box:

” [..] what a thunderstorm of a show it was to be! I’ll Be There For You’s ad-libs time-stamp and extra scream already made sure to knock everyone off their feet and it was only to get better from then on:

Blame It On The Love Of Rock And Roll with its only performance, time-stamp or check the 11 year old upload from hAnD90, featuring this unique performance- NB he KNEW this was the only time this song was played, over a decade ago already!-

fast-paced Dry County (with raspy vocals!),time-stamp, to the beginning of this epic song not just to the raspy vocals, because cutting in Dry Country is what we in Bon Jovi call heresy-

bar-band groove throughout the end of the main set (including a little snippet of Little Richard’s “Living In The U.S.A.”,time-stamp

And if one thought that was good, the encore was to blow that all out of the water! Bed Of Roses with a harmonica intro time-stamp in its most sincere and bare-bone presentation,

an In These Arms rendition with amazingly clear and long notes, time-stamp only to transition into countless improvised lyrics, time-stamp that lead into the night’s grand finale – Livin’ On A Prayer!

I’m making yoga videos for my Dutch yoga channel, and in last week’s talk I compared hAnD90 to the Mozart of Bon Jovi fandom; So far above what others are able to create, and now dominating in two areas- remastering old recordings AND blogging about them in the description box. Yet, fear not! I will keep writing about Bon Jovi until the day I die. And the reason I will keep writing, is because of the reason mentioned in that one Bon Jovi song, played live only once! On that final night in Japan 1993:

Blame it on the love of rock-n-roll

Newly added

Bon Jovi 17 June 1993, Yokohama has been added to: New in Bon Jovi concerts before 1997 Including the 11 year old upload, highlighting Blame it on the love of rock-n-roll‘s only performance, which this clearly-not-Mozart had managed to miss in her first edition of the list. And I have added the two hAnD90 videos to the playlist: “Part I: Bon Jovi concerts on this day 10 June – 5 December (before 1997) https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiGoDE3C06ScAo9UN4GyhtQWYfl3d6jMT” at June 17

Bang Bang! First ever European headliner show | Paris 1985 | Bon Jovi 1985 05 07 | New remaster on YouTube

New remaster  Bon Jovi 7 May 1985 L’ Eldorado Theatre Paris, France 🇫🇷 🏟️ 7800º Fahrenheit Tour new remaster AM Broadcast 🎛️🎶🎧-> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ei8Z5a5WgAI Full Show  🎛️🎶🎧-> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxHcX9TYYL4 a previous missed-by-me upload from 5 August 2020 One week ago, on 24 September 2023, the hAnD90 channel uploaded a remastered audio of Bon Jovi’s first headliner concert on European soil; Paris, France, in the spring of 1985. Bon Jovi had just released their second album 7800º Fahrenheit, and although in North-America they would still be cornered in the opening slot for the rest of the year; Japan and Europe were ready for more! So before duty called touring North-America with RATT, they toured Japan in April, and Europe in May. On their own accord. The European leg of the tour started in Paris, in a place which I think has an early 20th century ring to it! L’ Eldorado Theatre Wikipedia tells us the Eldorado was indeed a mid 19th century theatre. One of Toulouse Lautrec’s most famous works, an advertisement featuring a man with a cape, hat and a red scarf, was for a show at the Eldorado. It was commissioned by the artist himself, the man portrayed on the poster, entrepreneur and singer songwriter Aristide Bruant. The venue was still functioning under its original name when Bon Jovi played there, and a selection of songs from the show was broadcast on French radio. It is this broadcast that is now available in a new remastered upload. When I saw the new remaster, I checked to see if the concert was already in my playlists of 20th century Bon Jovi shows, or if it was newly available. The answer was that I had managed to miss it. So it was new to me, but it had been there all along. Earlier uploads were not spotted by me, and the show was missing from my playlists. So I have added an earlier upload of the show as well, also because this older recording, although still incomplete, does include the first four songs: Tokyo Road, Roulette, Breakout, Only Lonely. With the new hAnD90 remaster, Bon Jovi’s historic first headliner concert is one step closer to being immortalized, just like Aristide Bruant will forever be remembered by the art work Toulouse Lautrec made for him.

Bang Bang!

👩🏼‍💻 the story 1 October 2023

You were five when I was six We rode on horses made of sticks When you were nine and I was ten You swore our love until the end

Bang bang!

the first four songs

For the first four songs, we’re going to turn to the longer, older upload: Bon Jovi – Live at L’Eldorado | Full Concert in Audio | Paris 1985 length: 1:13:17 by Bon Jovi Live Concerts

“Will you please welcome, from the streets of New York City back to the streets of Paris France, Bon Jovi!”

The recording opens with a single electric guitar and a voice-over introducing the band, and as irrational as it sounds, I cannot hear anyone else in this voice but Jon Bon Jovi himself. So I will go with the assumption he did their own introduction, still off-stage, and then they walked on stage to kick it off with Tokyo Road – a song from their second album 7800º Fahrenheit, which was then 6 weeks old – and straight into the second song Roulette, from the first album.

Bon soir Paris! It’s good to be back, real good to be back. We ended our last tour here with KISS in November. And we knew you guys knew how to rock, but now we gotta know if you guys know how to sing.

At this point, before Jon has given away he’s hinting at the acapella Woo-woo sing-and-answer live intro to Breakout; A few people in the audience are already singing it! A sign there were dedicated fans in the small crowd. The venue has a maximum of a thousand, but judging from the sounds of the audience I sincerely doubt they had this.

We got a brand new album out, and we had to start our tour in Paris.

Only Lonely is introduced with the announcement of the new album and the reminder that they had to start the tour here in Paris, after having ended the previous one here as well. And after this second album song, we’re already moving into the piano driven harmonies of the cover song “Bang Bang”. A song which was not carved into my memory until the turn of the century movies Kill Bill 1 and 2, but which Bon Jovi had picked up on and integrated into their earliest of shows. This is where the French radio edit starts, and we can switch to the new upload. .

the french radio broadcast

Bon Jovi | Live at L’ Eldorado Theatre | AM Broadcast | Diehard Audio | Paris 1985 length: 50:22 by hAnD90  Whomever directed the radio edit, they sure knew what they were doing! Not only do the haunting harmonies and lyrics of Bang Bang make a compelling show opener, the song also functions as an introduction to; -a song that surprises me -and wins me over -and has me writing things on my notepad like “best song ever?!”; Time and time again! The absolutely unmatched first album song “Shot Through The Heart”! Later on, after the first two albums of Bon Jovi had quietly sunk away into oblivion, the title would still be immediately recognizable because the words have been repeated in Bon Jovi’s breakthrough hit “You Give Love a Bad Name”. But in 1985 Paris, France, Shot Through The Heart was still a standalone and captivating song. It was their best song to date, and apparently it still has the power to make bloggers wonder 40 years later, if perhaps it was still their best song ever! The audio from Paris does not come with a visual, but there is a pro-shot video from Tokyo on the 28th of April, so less than 10 days prior. It gives you an impression of how the performance of Bang bang/ Shot Through The Heart in Paris, must have looked like: Bon Jovi – Bang Bang / Shot Through The Heart (Tokyo 1985) After Shot Through the Heart, Jon Bon Jovi addresses the crowd again, but his introduction of the ballad Silent Night, trying to get the crowd in a more gentle mood, goes a bit off-point when Jon also tries to address someone named Gus, about the feedback. This is a definition of what feedback is: “when the amplified sound from any loudspeaker re-enters the sound system through any open microphone and is amplified again and again and again.” Silent Night, another brand new song from the Fahrenheit album, would stay on the setlist for almost two years, until early 1987. That’s when Never Say Goodbye would take over its ballad spot. Again, footage from Japan from the 28th, a crisp video makeover of much higher quality than Shot Through The Heart, gives an impression of what Silent Night looked like at the time. However it does not give us a second go at a husky sentence Jon speaks to close the song, because it has been edited out, or Jon didn’t say it in Japan. “Bye bye baby” he whispers in the microphone. Sans break, the show rolls into The Hardest Part is the Night. Probably the most “80s rock” song, Bon Jovi ever made! But I’m open to be proven wrong. Then Jon addresses the crowd asking them if they believe in rock n’roll, and after both the floor and the balcony have given satisfying roars back, he gives the stage to Richie Sambora’s guitar solo. An eclectic mix but if you listen closely, you can already hear which parts would be taken along for the ride, becoming Wanted Dead or Alive’s introductory song, or transform into the musical intermezzo of Bad Medicine, played live. The guitar crosses over into In and Out of Love, another one from the Fahrenheit album. Next up is Runaway. Opening with a synthesizer intro, keyboard player David Brian drives the crowd wild, playing only a few chords and then halting. Breakout’s catchy call-and-response from the earliest part of the show, is still not forgotten, and you can hear a few audience members on the verge of belting it, the moment they lose their patience being teased. What I’m going to dub the final song of the main set, is an exciting version of Get Ready, including a long improvised interaction between Jon’s call to “Raise your hands”, Richie’s guitar and the crowd bravely trying to keep up with everything happening on stage!   “We’ll see you again!” Jon closes. The same members of the audience immediately fill the silence with the Woo Woos from Breakout, although at this point their knowledge of the exact melody has been lost. And then, le moment supreme! At least to me, because hearing stories like this really teaches me about resilience, about showing up, giving all you’ve got, and all those more personal qualities, that are the reason Jon Bon Jovi and band got to the top, and stayed at the top! And I honestly do not understand the whole story, I think that would take someone who is a native English speaker. But Bon Jovi tells the crowd that they have lost all their equipment coming from Tokyo to Paris, and then he thanks what appears to be another band for lending them their equipment. Wait, what right?! You’re making your debut as a headliner on European soil, and you made your mark using someone else’s gear?!  And without a clue where your own stuff is? That’s tenacity! Jon thanks the Paris’ crowd, and then the encore follows. With one howling guitar, Jon Bon Jovi sings a slow intro to Burning for Love:

Your love keeps me burning. I don’t know what it is…. Paris France; You keep me burning for your love

We listen to the encore, until a French broadcaster interrupts, and the recording fades out. An unworthy ending of a concert edit that was well-thought through, beginning to almost the end. It had resisted making it too smooth by cutting out all intros or speeches. And yet it was concise enough to fit into 50 minutes, giving listeners all over France an impression of Bon Jovi. You do not want to butcher the ending, after putting so much thought into the rest. And yet by cutting in bluntly, that is exactly what they did.

Bang bang! You shot me down Bang bang! I hit the ground That awful sound bang bang My baby shot me down

Fathers love daughters | 2nd night Tokyo 1993 | Bon Jovi 1993 06 04 | New remaster on YouTube

New remaster  Bon Jovi 4 June 1993 Nippon Budokan, Tokyo, Japan 🇯🇵 2nd night 🏟️ Keep the Faith Tour 🎛️🎶🎧-> https://youtu.be/Y5N9WRvAHko?si=-sL7RecDeWlbUjmO One week ago, on 17 September 2023, the hAnD90 channel uploaded a remastered audio of  Bon Jovi’s second concert of the Japanese leg of the tour. from the description box:

“Jon was clearly on an absolute high after having become a father since he was pushing all songs to new heights and did so on multiple occasions during that Japanese leg!”

And the show comes with four encores, AND the accolade of being his “tour favorite”!  So even though Tokyo June 4, 1993 is not a previously unheard show, but “merely” a remaster of a concert which has already been available on the channel “Just Dominic” – a beautiful “boutique” Bon Jovi channel which, along with a few others, I intend to have a look at for any undiscovered gems, but with the hAnD90 channel being so prolific this will probably be in the new decade!😅 –  there was just something about this remaster that called:

“Write.Me.”

So here we go!

Fathers love daughters

👩🏼‍💻 the story 24 september 2023

.
Jon Bon Jovi dancing with his daughter Stephanie Rose, Las Vegas 25 February 2017
When Jon Bon Jovi entered the stage for their concerts in Japan, he had just become a first-time father to a girl who would remain his only daughter; Stephanie Rose. And it was as if she immediately brought out the best in him, because those concerts were among the most inspired ones of his career. In 2000 Bon Jovi would record a song “I Got the Girl” for the Crush album, which was about her. And in 2017 she joined her father on stage, dancing together to I got the Girl. Jon Bon Jovi had introduced the song as:

“I wrote this song for that little baby, who’s now not such a little baby anymore.”

But in 1993, few words seemed appropriate to describe his overwhelming happiness. And if he had already found them, in those first days of her life, they would remain hidden until the new millennium. However her presence did spark a crispness, a freshness to his performance and to the interpretation of the songs, the band had been used to playing together for eons! Jon starts visiting the higher registers, in the second half of Born to be my Baby, and finishes the song with some beautifully sung adlibs (extra lyrics); An acapella “I Can’t Help Falling In Love”(!) is back to introduce Bed of Roses, replacing a cover called Alison. As if Jon cannot phantom singing another woman’s name, at this stage. The cover With A Little Help From My Friends is dropped. Not the best time to think your friends helped out here😅 Richie Sambora subtly chips in, playing a snippet to Ballad of Youth in his guitar song, the prelude to Wanted: Dead or Alive. But with Love for Sale and Tokyo Road making their tour debut, both featuring let’s say “more mature” themes, let’s not overdo looking for analogies that aren’t there 😉 Although all 2 hours and 15 minutes of the recording are worth listening to, these are my personal recommendations; Born to be my Baby, adlibs 18:25 including the phrase “I held you in my arms” Keep the Faith improvisation 32:55 Pure showmanship whipping the crowd into a frenzy at 1:19:45‘s Bad Medicine. Mandatory listening to Richie Sambora’s entire acoustic guitar song. Bring tissues. Ballad of Youth, where he draws inspiration from, is from his 1991 solo album Stranger in this Town, and can be listened to here. And lastly, the band coming back and playing a fourth encore, 2:04:12, an acoustic set where they surely saved the best for last! Richie Sambora’s guitar, Jon’s spoken word, Richie’s backing vocals, and the band’s harmonies;  All bringing Love for Sale to life!  And an acoustic I’ll Be There For You (2:08:41 ) bringing it where this whole story started; Home.

Fathers love daughters like mothers love sonsThey’ve been writing our story before there was oneFrom the day you arrive, ’til you walk, ’til you runThere is nothing but pride, there is nothing but love”

The Story of Love (2020) Bon Jovi

27 Years later the special bond with his daughter Stephanie Rose, would still be on Jon’s mind. Somewhere in the front.

Unlocked after 30 years: The Woodlands, Texas, 1993 | Bon Jovi 1993 07 11 Richie’s Birthday | New on YouTube

For those sensitive to rhythm, logic and symbolism, there is an irresistible rhythm, to the Keep the Faith Tour.
All dates were set within one calendar year, from the snow of Canada’s opening shows in February, all year and the globe around, and then ending as it had started;
With a Canadian Tour in November, December and wrapping up with their fourth annual Christmas concert in Redbank, in December 1993

Many parts of the tour were done twice; The first early in the year, with  indoor venues, and then a second round in summer, visiting open air sites.
The Woodlands, Texas, is one of them, as North America was toured twice as well.

Although The Woodlands, 1993 was known by bootleg collectors, the recording was unknown to the general public.
But after 30 years it has now been remastered by hAnD90 and posted to YouTube on September 9th 2023.

Bon Jovi | Live at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion | The Woodlands 1993

The show takes place on Richie Sambora’s birthday, which is commemorated twice:
Jon welcoming the crowd at 12:12 to “the biggest birthday party you’ll ever get invited to.”
And 1:22:15 to sing Happy Birthday with the crowd, and quite well!
But did I just hear Jon shave off a few years, his “31st” birthday when it should have been 34th?
Or is it “21st” birthday, as kind of a joke because that is not true?

I’m known for being fallible in understanding what Jon says. Even for the tag line of this blog, They say that to really free the body, you gotta free your mind, a spoken word intro from the album version of Lay Your Hands On Me;
I think I consulted as many other fans as possible!
So maybe I am hallucinating and Jon did say Richie’s 34th.

Either way, there was a party!!

Classic 1993 setlist with Blood Money and Blaze of Glory from Jon’s 1990 album Blaze of Glory, both would stay regulars on the 1995 tour.
The Texas crowd treats us to Wanted; Dead or Alive.
They sing the entire first verse!

But hands down the best part of Richie’s Birthday show in Texas 1993, is the third (!) encore;
Two songs, entirely acoustic.

Starting with a merry cover of Southside Johnny’s I Don’t Wanna Go Home and then everyone’s favorite ballad, Never Say Goodbye. Where Jon adds such beautiful heartfelt lyrics to the outro, you may want to keep a box of tissues handy.

This third and closing encore, is so intimate you really feel like you were one of the 700 lucky ones catching them on one of their pre-tour gigs late 1992,
as mentioned in the previous blogpost.
Instead of one of the 16.500 attendees at the open-air venue of Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.

Richie’s and Jon’s harmonies in the closer of this birthday show, the acoustic Never Say Goodbye, just cut through right through your heart.

To the part that will always stay 21 years old.

ABOUT THIS SERIES

In 2022 -2023 I started the “concerts on this day” series;
Resulting in many blogposts and two full fledged playlists.

Part I: Bon Jovi concerts on this day 10 June – 5 December (before 1997)
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiGoDE3C06ScAo9UN4GyhtQWYfl3d6jMT

And:

Part II: Bon Jovi concerts on this day 6 Dec-9 June (before 1997)
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiGoDE3C06ScbVI_oPZcf77OtrO_935JD

My current fan work is to keep those two playlists up to date, and I will be writing about new uploads.
Which is how Bon Jovi, Richie’s Birthday show at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, The Woodlands, Texas, 1993, came about.

Fast Lane, Asbury Park, New Jersey, first promo concert Keep the Faith | Bon Jovi 1992 10 12 | New remaster on YouTube

New remaster  Bon Jovi 12 October 1992 Fast Lane, Asbury Park New Jersey 🇺🇸 🏟️ first promo concert Keep the Faith 🎛️🎶🎧-> https://youtu.be/7YJGODS4Qm8?si=B4U3LjQoocqkwD0c On 3 September 2023, the hAnD90 channel uploaded a remastered audio of  Bon Jovi in a small venue called “Fast Lane”, 1992. The venue is one of many music venues at the New Jersey shore line, where Jon Bon Jovi played in the late 70s and early 80s, in a variety of bands including performing together with Bruce Springsteen and Southside Johnny. from the description box: “To get into the groove for their Keep The Faith world tour, Bon Jovi embarked on a club tour with seemingly randomly chosen venues, ranging from Tempe in Arizona to Toronto in Canada and, of course, the Jersey shoreline. For that night’s concert, the venue’s marquee only read “Jon Bongiovi and The Wild Ones”, a nod to the numerous times Jon had played that venue with his bands back in the late 70’s and early 80’s.” In 2022, I wrote a small story about the significance of this homecoming concert. I will repost it, here below.

NB: live premiere of Keep the Faith songs?

Note that I do not know why (in 2022) I was certain this had been the first performance. The 1992 promotional concerts are not well documented, and my printed tour schedules have two dates: 11 October 1992, just saying “Asbury Park” And 12 October: “Fast Lane Asbury Park”, so that is the show we do today. But if 11 October really happened it was not the first show, obviously. I am sure that in 2022, I knew what I was doing! But now, reposting the story to celebrate the new remaster, I no longer have the full backup story. This is the backstory, of the homecoming concert in the Fast Lane in New Jersey:

Not sure what to play

👩🏼‍💻 the story 12 October 2022

At 12:00 and 12:50 you can hear someone yell”Welcome home!”
If it had not been for the continuous female screaming during the opener “With a little help from my friends”, one may indeed have mistaken Bon Jovi’s debut performance to promote their Keep the Faith album, for a run-of-the-New-Jersey-mill bar band. As several newspapers implied. But as much as that might have been true, musically speaking, there was one aspect to Bon Jovi playing there, at the Fast Lane venue in Asbury Park, New Jersey’s holy ground for anyone who is anything in the New Jersey music scene, an aspect that was the theme of the whole night, and that aspect was; They had been away. Unlike local bands, Bon Jovi had been from New Jersey, not in New Jersey. The audience to this under-cover club gig, consisted largely of family, friends, people from the music industry, and then there were the few lucky fans who managed to get a ticket. None of them knew what to expect. The upcoming album Keep the Faith, had not been released yet. And what Bon Jovi knew, was that they had a big acoustic production in the wings, coming up in two weeks time; An Evening With Bon Jovi for MTV. Bon Jovi needed to get their head around their set, including the 60s covers they intended to blend in. But they didn’t want to lose the connection with the audience either. To make matters one could say “worse”; The band were not just transitioning into a new musical style, but they were out of practice and even out of touch, of playing together live. When in the first months of 1990, touring had finally come to a stop – Bon Jovi needed to clean house. For a while they were literally out of touch, and did not even speak to each other. Many, including the band, did not know if there was a future for Bon Jovi. In October 1992, that was all put behind them and the band had been on the west coast and in Canada for over half a year, recording Keep the Faith, before they came back to New Jersey and played Asbury Park. What do you play when after all that time, you are finally home?

. Read more?

Although I listened to the recording of the Fast Lane concert for days in a row, I have resisted the temptation to write a review or new article about it. One of the reasons is because we already have an excellent, detailed review, written by someone who was actually there that night: https://www.newspapers.com/article/4800485/jon-bon-jovi-at-the-fast-lane-oct-14/ And there is an introductory one, probably the first page of the same newspaper: https://www.newspapers.com/article/4800718/bon_jovi_at_the_fast_lane_oct_13_1992/ So there is no way I can top that now. But I will say that if you don’t listen to anything – listen at least to an acoustic cover of Midnight Rider (time stamped link). Which may be my favorite part of the whole show, which is spectacular in its bare bones production style. Midnight Rider functions as the introduction to an also acoustic version of Wanted; Dead or Alive.

Mannheim Monsters of Rock, Germany | Bon Jovi 1986 08 31 | Concerts on this day

Soundtrack of the day:

Bon Jovi
31 August 1986
Mannheim, Germany🇩🇪
🏟️Slippery When Wet Tour

🎛️🎶🎧->
https://youtu.be/vrfw8oyCeNc?si=B1gqNnzeSMBG0zTL

Mannheim was part of a two day festival Monsters of Rock;
they performed 30 August in Nurnberg and 31 August in Mannheim.

The two day stop-over in Europe was scheduled in between Japan (first leg of the Slippery When Wet Tour) and the United States, where they’d be heading next.
Bon Jovi would return to Europe in December.

Final non-megastar concert

👩🏼‍💻 the story 31 August

When pinpointing Bon Jovi’s worldwide breakthrough to mega superstars,  there really is only one place to land;
1986

Even Jon Bon Jovi once posted a 1986 photo, sitting in a hotel room in Japan August 1986.
The caption referred to the fact that he had not known the band was on the cusp of their big breakthrough.
The mega success, they had been fighting for ever since Jon Bon Jovi scored his solo hit Runaway, and founded the band in the months after.

I once got asked which Bon Jovi concert I would have loved to attend, if given a chance. Without batting an eyelash answered;
“Arnhem 1986!”
A December concert on a short November/December European tour, that took them through the UK and the continent.
By November, You Give Love A Bad Name had become a world wide hit as well as the follow up single Livin’ on a Prayer.
Releasing the two singles in tandem was a key element in their success, bypassing any discussion of them being a one-hit-wonder, from the get go.

But even though in hindsight we can see why it worked;
Let’s not forget that initially, many things did not!
Due to the cover of the Slippery When Wet album being changed, the release date was pushed forward, which effectively meant they went on tour without it.

Jon’s speeches in August’s Japanese tour, about the album being released on that day or around that time, suggest the name of the album having been changed for the Japanese market, but was it?
The cover for Japan is however the old one with the woman’s bust, and the pink edge.
And the release dates you can hear Jon saying in the 1986 Japanese concerts, do not exactly match up with what we now believe the release dates must have been.

In other words;
The release of the 1986 album, was a mess.
And subsequently the band’s tour had started on the wings of its release, but they could not benefit from the audience already knowing the new songs.

The first single, You Give Love a Bad Name, was released on 23rd of July 1986, so a month before the album.
But before I look into where exactly, it was released on this day – and if perhaps Europe was actually later – I think the polite applause in Mannheim 1986 after Jon Bon Jovi tells them the next song is You Give Love A Bad Name – “This is the song you’ve been hearing on the radio”-
tells all we need to know about how well that classic Bon Jovi song was known at the time;
It wasn’t.

So when Bon Jovi made their stop in Germany, on their way from the Japan leg of their tour to America, where they’d go next;
They did not have super star status at those two Monsters of Rock stages in Nurnberg on the 30th of August, nor Mannheim on the 31st.

Yet in the US?
Oh, that was a different story!
You Give Love A Bad Name was on a steady course to the top of the charts, and it was taking the album with it.
In fact the success in America was so quick and overwhelming, the critics in the press immediately disliked Bon Jovi and started writing the most unfavorable things about the band.

Nasty words they had to eat within 9 months, when the 500th edition of Rolling Stone Magazine featured Jon Bon Jovi on the cover!

They say David Bryan was the only one who clipped and kept the band-bashing review the magazine had done in 1986.
Because he knew Bon Jovi would not be held back.

But aside from those critics?
Bon Jovi was loved in the USA, unanimously. Although it didn’t skyrocket to number one right away, it was as if the album and the single had unleashed something, and every week it rose in the charts.
Late October 1986 the album was in pole position, where it would stay for 15 weeks.
And b
y the time Bon Jovi would return for their November/December European tour, the rest of the world was rapidly catching up.

But on 30 and 31 August?
No one knew what lay ahead.

So what we listen to, in Mannheim 1986 is not the Bon Jovi who knew they’d soon be holding the world in the palm of their hand.
And that their album would be the biggest selling rock album of the 80s.
No;
We’re listening to a band who is using the tricks, the format, and the road they have been paving for years!

They appeal to the Americans, stationed in Mannheim, by name-dropping New Jersey several times.
They play around with the German word for “cheers”, and turn it into a dedication for Thin Lizzy.

For their whole 50 minute set you hear them reaching out, leaning forward, and connecting to the German festival crowd;
Using the “my side your side” routine as well as Richie Sambora’s rousing electric guitar intros, both already present in the earliest shows.

You hear them musically bringing it, with their exceptional melodic and varied set, including using an acapella rendition, this time of the cover “I don’t want to go home”, as an introduction to their traditional main set closer “Get Ready”.
Mannheim 1986 had all the elements of a classic early Bon Jovi show, enhanced with songs of the new album.

In their last concert before knowing how big they’d be, Bon Jovi does not show us they are the biggest band in the world;
They show us why they became it.

Therefor:

Only concert ever in Bayreuth, Germany | Bon Jovi 1993 08 25 | New on YouTube

New on YouTube:

Bon Jovi
25 August 1993
Bayreuth, Germany🇩🇪
🏟️Keep the Faith Tour

🎛️🎶🎧->
https://youtu.be/Jy_SYC5EzsQ?si=gEEIiA1b8FrT-o-L

For those sensitive to rhythm, logic and symbolism, there is an irresistible rhythm, to the Keep the Faith Tour.
All dates were set within one calendar year, from the snow of Canada’s opening shows in February, all year and the globe around, and then ending as it had started;
With a Canadian Tour in November, December and wrapping up with their fourth annual Christmas concert in Redbank, in December 1993

Many countries hosted both a series of indoor concerts, as well as an open air leg in summer.
And one of those countries, was Germany.

So when Bon Jovi visited Bayreuth, a town North to Nuremberg, it was part of that summer leg of their Europe tour.
There were 7 (!) other Bon Jovi concerts in Germany, between 18 and 29th of August, and among them a concert at the Kanzlers Weide (a meadow) in Minden, which comes with the best story, of the band being stuck in the mud with their limousines.

But another legendary one was Bayreuth, because judging from the fact Bon Jovi only visited once, this means it wasn’t a regular venue for big concerts.
But we never had that concert! It was not on YouTube.
Until now.

“But is it any good?” I hear you wonder.
Fortunately, it is!
Retrieved and restored by YouTube channel hAnD90, it was made public this month.

Bon Jovi | Legendary Concert at Städtisches Stadion | 30th Anniversay | Bayreuth 1993

from the description box:
“What I like about these shows is the inclusion of the Beatles’s classic “Help!” and Jon’s attitude of adding massive additional lyrics to their In These Arms performances. “

Help! opens the encore, after what feels like an eternity of waiting for the band to return. Building up the tension, and making this piano-driven coversong like it came straight from the heavens. Not in the least due to their harmonies, and Richie Sambora stunningly delivering the second verse.

After Help! Richie Sambora continues to strike a chord, or a lot of them, because he gets to do his own guitar song;
An improv play that sounds particularly fresh and that is deeply intertwined with the cinematic Wanted; Dead or Alive, tonight.

Not two separate songs.

After Wanted they move into the two closers of what was supposed to be the only encore: 1. In These Arms and 2. Livin’ on a Prayer.

Before In These Arms Jon thanks the audience, on behalf of the band, of Billy Idol, and “Little Angels”, which was the actual band name of the second support act!
Not a creative way of referring to the rest of the band or the crew 😉

The outro to In These Arms seamlessly crosses over into an acapella intro to Livin’ on a Prayer.
And then the concert was supposed to be over, if it had not been for the band returning!
Probably because the German crowd does not yell “We want more”, but stick to German “Zugabe!”.
I think that did the trick.

The band returns and Jon asks if they don’t need to go home, and go to work tomorrow (just to be sure they want it!) and then says:
“Somebody bring us a pizza from back there I’m starving.”
Before their final song of the night kicks in: “This is for you my friends.”
It is indeed the cover song: With A Little Help From My Friends.

And there ends the only concert Bon Jovi ever gave in Bayreuth, Germany.
It was a night to remember, and now with an actual audio recording;
We can.

Bon Jovi Bayreuth, Germany 1993 , was uploaded on 22 August 2023

My (way) better halfs

I want to thank the hAnD90 channel for his prolific work, as well as Jane who diligently keeps an “On this day” archive on Twitter.

Although I have definitely found my own unique voice and way to contribute as a writer within the Bon Jovi fandom, I will be always be less consistent in my content creation and am forever indebted (and inspired!) by their magnificent and consistent contributions.

Thank you guys!
I would order a pizza for you!

ABOUT THIS SERIES

From May 2023 and up, there have been many new uploads on the hAnD90 channel;
Multiple of which were previously unavailable, which I will highlight here.

Which is how “Bayreuth, Germany 1993” resurfaced after 30 years.

After creating an overview of all concerts 1983-1996, I have not yet committed to a new project.
