Slippery When Wet Tour

This story about the first concerts from the Slippery When Wet Tour, right before this album made it big, was originally blogged in August this year (2022).
But this very first concert, in Nagoya, was not included at the time.
In all likeliness, it had not been uploaded to YouTube just yet.
Which is why I am reposting this blog, in an updated version with the Nagoya concert recording included.

And let’s not waste time here lingering!
But haste ourselves to the story as determined as Jon Bon Jovi barging into Mark Weiss’ photo studio without even saying hello.

He was there to shoot the fourth (!) cover for the Slippery When Wet album,
and the only thing he said was:

“Garbage bag. Spray bottle.”

Not knowing what you’ve got

👩🏼‍💻 the story August 15/ October 1

..

Yesterday (in August) I said Bon Jovi would not romanticize Japan 1986, but I have to eat my words! This beautiful photo was tweeted by JBJ in 2021. “Still staring out the window wanting to go back to Japan. #TBT Tokyo, 1986.” Source Instagram, click the photo for the source.

The recorded concerts of the very first leg of the Slippery When Wet Tour, a leg during which the album had either;
-just been released
-was released in Japan a few days before the international release
or
-was released on the exact same date as Wikipedia will tell you it did;

On THAT leg of the tour, Japan 1986, there are 4 concerts unrecorded (or just a few songs uploaded to YouTube) and 6 concerts are recorded in full.

The recorded concerts of the 1986 Japan leg of the Slippery When Wet tour, are:
August 11, Nagoya (new)
August 12, Fukuoka
August 13, Osaka first night
August 14, Osaka second night
August 16, Kobe
August 18, Tokyo

August 18th was the official release date for the Slippery When Wet album, but when you listen to these concerts you will hear the following:

August 11, Nagoya (new)
“We have a new album, called Slippery When Wet. It will be here next week.”
August 12, Fukuoka
“We have a new album coming out this week, called Slippery When Wet”
August 13, Osaka first night
“We have a new album coming out in two more days, it’s called Slippery When Wet”
August 14, Osaka second night
“We have a brand new album, it came out today and it’s called Slippery When Wet”
August 16, Kobe
“We have a brand new album, it’s called Wild In The Streets, here in Japan”
August 18, Tokyo
“We have a brand new album, that’s called Wild In The Streets, here in Japan”

Click for the video

The description box of this final recording, the Tokyo concert, mentions:
“Jon thinks the album is gonna be called Wild In The Streets in Japan whereas backstage footage actually shows them signing Slippery When Wet copies before or after the show.”
I looked for this video, and you can find it here:
Bon Jovi One Night Stand 1986, Japan(Nippon Budokan) You Give Love A Bad Name

Perhaps the confusion arose because that 18th, they had been signing copies with a different cover:
A woman’s bust in a yellow shirt.

It had been the third cover idea, and one that had actually already made it to print, when both band and record company decided to pull it.
Although both for different reasons: The record company pulled this already printed stack of album covers, out of fear for the PMRC.

“The Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) was an American committee formed in 1985 with the stated goal of increasing parental control over the access of children to music deemed to have violent, drug-related or sexual themes via labeling albums with Parental Advisory stickers.
[…]
before shutting down in the mid-to-late 1990s.”
wikipedia

While Bon Jovi agreed because they hated the hot pink border around the photo.

This was when, after all the photo sessions that had taken place when the album would still have a cowboy theme (and be called Wanted Dead or Alive);
After the photo sessions with the band and seven women in hotpants and crop tops soaping and hosing down fast cars;

And after a studio photo of women’s hands holding a soapy bar of Slippery When Wet soap;
Jon came barging into Mark Weiss’ photo studio.

From Mark Weiss book, The Decade That Rocked:
“After Jon saw the soap cover, he called me to say he was coming over. I asked him what we were going to do, and he replied:

“I don’t know, but this is our last chance or the album gets held up.””
He presented his two-to-twelve legendary cover idea writing the title onto an oil and water sprayed garbage bag, and the rest is Rock N’ Roll history.

But the ever changing, costly cover was not the only sign that the band had not found their finite form yet.
Or they had, because their album Slippery When Wet was already finished;
But they were still unsure it would actually “work”.

The summer months of 1986 were a rare time period, where they did not quite know how, or where, to show up or to present themselves.
There is even mention of a private gig for a highschool concert, in June 1986:
14 June 1986, Collegiate Highschool, Passaic (/Newark), New Jersey.
A private concert, months before Bon Jovi would become so famous concert organizers would no longer be able to find venues big enough to satisfy the demand.

And the setlists of these Japan concerts too, display an in-between era. The audience had come to see them based on their first two albums, which would later become almost redundant in their catalog.
Yet, the shows were part of the tour for their new album, an album which had not been released, at the time of the concerts.
Or had it?

Did the Japanese audience know the Slippery When Wet album, or didn’t they?

In all likeliness, the audience was familiar with You Give Love A Bad Name. According to Wikipedia, this single had been released in July, so that was a known song.
But the release date of the album in Japan, remains unclear.

Jon Bon Jovi switches up the dates during the shows, but seems to be more or less fixed on the date being the international release date, August 18th.
But videos show that the album cover, was the original Japanese pressing.
In all probability, Japan getting the original cover was because there had not been time to get the reprint shipped to Japan before the start of the tour.

But even 36 years after, it seems impossible to trace.

I’m going to go with Japan having gotten their Slippery When Wet, 8 days prior to the rest of the world.
On August 10.
Because this is the date on Discogs, the release date for this Japan album.

On Nagoya, they played 6 out of 17 songs, from Slippery When Wet, and other nights were similar.
But Livin’ On A Prayer wasn’t played on either one of the 6 concerts.
Their biggest hit, had not been picked as the first single, and it was nowhere in sight, at the start of their Slippery When Wet Tour.

As the tour moved back to North America and Europe, they no longer had to introduce their new album, and people came to see the hits of that album being performed.
They found their sweet spot of creating a setlist that featured their new album, and a few songs from their first two.

By the end of 1986, the whole world would know Bon Jovi, and the majority of those people would only know the hits from the Slippery When Wet album.
Only fans that dug deeper, hungry for more, would have found these first two albums.
Albums that would ultimately, be lost in time.

As would the short time window, the months in the summer of 1986, when Bon Jovi already had all the right pieces.
Everything was already in place, and their fate already sealed.

They just didn’t know it.

Am I done with the peak experiences? | 24 August | Bon Jovi 24 August 1993 | Kiel, Germany

click for source, tweet from @jane_jbj

Wednesday 24 August
The soundtrack for today is:

Bon Jovi
24 August 1993
Ostseehalle
Kiel, Germany 🇩🇪
🏟️ Keep the Faith/ Sleep When I’m Dead Tour

Once upon a time, not so long ago, I would suffer a backlash after I had sex. And it was unpredictable what form it would have.
It was very well possible the following day was one of great creative output, where I came up with sales pages, new projects, lengthy blogposts, or otherwise creative accomplishments I would never have had, if it had not been for the fact that I had sex the day before.
.
Or it could be that I woke up in such a deplorable state of neediness and emotional dependence, I had a deep understanding of why couples can’t wait to solidify their coupling, and put some healthy borders around it, so that sex can start taking place WITHIN them.
And you no longer wake up feeling emotionally stretched, taxed and without a clue where to start your road to recovery once more.
.
But I no longer have that.
I wouldn’t say I just pull up my pants and say: “See you next time!”
Of course it takes effort, from two people, to create a wholesome experience and mentally stabilize you both, before you part.
There has definitely been a learning curve in that one, but I’m confident that I will never suffer a shattered broken heart if things end, and that the awful post-sex feeling will only happen if I wasn’t feeling good in my own skin.
I know what to look for, in myself and the other, and
no longer have to take into account 72 hours of being on a rollercoaster, until I am my old self again.
Or at least;
Not for sex!
.

Because the restlessness, the migraines, the sleepless nights, the anxiety and

the panic attacks seem to have migrated from being an aftermath to sex, to being a social hangover or a backlash from going to concerts.

Jon Bon Jovi the day after Kiel, 1993. He looks like he’s also paying for his peak experiences. Source: @jane_jbj (or click photo for tweet)

For the backlash from social events, I don’t have a solution.
And they also never result in creative outbursts, because I can’t (or won’t) write about my friends, family or any business or work-related events or contacts.
So although one-on-one conversations are always pleasant, and those dates/ friendships/ connections almost always fruitful and satisfying in all ways;
When it’s a group thing it leaves me feeling overwhelmed, small, and underappreciated and it costs me tremendous effort to coach myself out of it. And a tremendous amount of time.
Hardly a surprise then that I limit them.

But the backlash from concerts, or any “occasional” group event where I can come and go as I please and have no ties nor obligations?
That’s a different ballgame!
The dynamic unfolding from that, is much closer to the one I have in my love life. Or used to have since my love life seems under control now.
But I have that backlash, or rollercoaster, or that hyper productive creative outburst that then days later inevitably results into a total meltdown.

By recognizing this dynamic, I am on the path to correcting it, and mastering it. But still it is annoying to be smacked around by emotions you know can be navigated!

This summer’s strongest memories are of Guns N’ Roses concert and this week with the concert from a German Bon Jovi tribute band, Bounce.
.
Last weekend’s Bounce concert resulted in a long read (and long write!) for my Rock Star Writer blog:
That’s no tribute band; That’s a rock n’ roll orchestra!
| Tribute band Bounce | de Wolfsberg, Groesbeek | 2022 08 21
.
Which I was thrilled to be able to write, because based on what happened in the past, in my love life (and with Bon Jovi 2019, after the high of creative outburst had worn off) is that I can also have a meltdown. Something malicious that destroys me from the inside out.
Exactly like that post-sex feeling, where you’ve been so intimate, and you just need that person to call you and say they love you and everything will be okay.
Except they don’t.
Because you don’t have that type of relationship, or because he is Jon Bon Jovi and the band is on their way to Dublin already.
.

So far I have been able to avoid meltdowns, but this week is absolutely not the emotionally contained, productive, balanced week I would have liked it to be.

From an emotional point of view, both the concert as well as the creation of that long read/ long write, was disruptive.
It was intense.
It was chaos.
It was without having an understanding of how things would be tied up, rounded off, and in what shape I’d be once it had ran its course.
Once it had had its way with me.

Yet I knew, I BELONGED.
I knew being at the concert or being at my writing desk (Sunday 5 hours and Monday 8 hours) that I was exactly where I was supposed to be.
Just like when I am with a lover I know it is exactly where I am supposed to be.
And that means that anything that comes from it, good or bad, is for me as well.

But this morning I woke up, after a night of tossing and turning and 4 hours of sleep (which was already twice as much as Monday-Tuesday, when I slept 2), I woke up broken with a headache.
I felt sick as a dog, and immediately recognized it from the morning after the Guns N’ Roses concert. I had taken a hotel and I have never eaten such a tiny breakfast at a buffet that was delicious and already included in the price.
And at that breakfast, I still had a journey of over 3 hours waiting for me.
This morning I could get a paracetamol and go back to bed.
.
But boy…. did I recognize that feeling.
This morning I knew exactly why I don’t do social events, and also why I limit concerts to the ones I absolutely want to attend!
Because the sensory overload is just a bitch. And it can bite me in the ass days after, because I always keep listening to the music, concert recordings and so on, in the days after.
I keep engaging with the band I saw, just like writing about a sexual experience (under a different name) helps me to process it, and transmute it.
.
Peak experiences start anything between hours to days to even months in advance.
And they can last up to two weeks after.
In 2019, with the Bon Jovi concert, I had missed paying the rent for my yoga space for two consecutive months, before I had “landed” and started paying attention to my finances.
The landlord was very understanding, and no harm was done, but I always remembered that because it was the first time I had “evidence”  that I had really been in a different place, for a week or six.
.
But this summer has been the first time I have these experiences of feeling physically sick afterwards.
I had it after Guns N’ Roses, I had it after my birthday, I had it this morning and although it was handled with a few hours of extra sleep, I don’t know what the rest of this week brings.
.
Having peak experiences is fickle and risky, but it’s also addictive.
It gives you something no ordinary, how did I call it?
Productive and balanced?
It gives you something no productive and balanced week will ever be able to give you.
And from my love life, I do know that you can make progress. That you CAN, ultimately, get better at having a good time, without paying a high price afterwards.
.
But on mornings like this, on days like this, when I can still feel that rawness, that pain, somewhere very close to the surface, I do wonder:
Do I really want this?
Can’t I just be happy with my love life being exactly right, and keep a low-intensity profile for the rest?
.
One of the things I have found fascinating, is that while I was still recovering from Bon Jovi, from Guns N’ Roses;
The band was already on their way to their next stop.
Once I had landed, properly, once all my blogposts were done, all the inspiration was carried on into something else, and once I was back on earth in a way that I even bothered to check on my finance (something I do every day, if I m not in “concert-mode”) those bands had done 6 to 7 shows!
.
They had repeated the concert, again and again, where it had taken me weeks to recover!
And yes, with lovers too, I think they are out and about a lot sooner than I am.
.
But then I remember the belonging.
The knowing you are in the right place, at the right time, and there is certainty that this is your experience to have.
Or in case of the writing: You know that this is your creative work to do.
.
In 1993, Bon Jovi had what I would call their messiest tour. Their dirtiest tour, that was marked by inconsistent ticket sales, endless rescheduling, a wide variety in locations, indoor, outdoor, big, small;
It would have been enough to drive any rock star crazy, and it probably did.
Just listen to Jon going all in, on this mid-Bad Medicine improv at the Kiel concert
!
.
And when you watch those 1993 shows you can see it.
The wildness, the madness, the unease, the not knowing how you will make it to the other side, and IF you will make it to the other side.
But you know one thing:
.
This is where you belong.

A playlist of an upcoming channel;
And Bon Jovi’s rise to fame!

I’ve already written a post about the  1986 Japan leg of the Slippery When Wet Tour,
but there was simply so much to explore.
So with today, the 20th, being a day where we do not have a pre-1997 full concert recording, but only two single recordings for Yokohama, 1986, both exclusively uploaded by the FighterBJ channel*, I went through the rabbit hole and dived into this amazing time in Bon Jovi history.

* later today, FighterBJ uploaded the full concert Yokohama 1986 as well😍

The definition of EPIC!

👩🏼‍💻 the story August 20

..

I collected all 1986 recordings from the FighterBJ channel, and put them in chronological order;
Bon Jovi 1986 – A Transitional Year { FighterBJ Channel }
And, mind if I say Oh la la!
This is probably the best, most juicy playlist for the real Bon Jovi fan, who just keeps wanting more!

And you have FighterBJ to thank for it, because this niche channel has been diving deep into forgotten corners of the Bon Jovi timeline.
His knowledge about what happened in lost months, where to find lost recordings, and how to tie it all together to fill in the blanks of pre-stellar stardom Bon Jovi, is expanding every day.

Subscribe to his channel at
https://www.youtube.com/c/FighterBJ
If you’re on Twitter you can contact him at:
https://twitter.com/FighterSuch

Today, I made a playlist of all his 1986 recordings, in chronological order.
And although this was my selection, the year has a place in his heart as well.

He wrote me about Paris 1986:
Paris 1986 is the definition of EPIC!
Great energy throughout and just when you think it couldn’t get better Jon invites Phil Collen on stage for Boys Are Back.

Oh I do love that show!”

But not just Paris.
After crafting this list, in my opinion;
Whole Bon Jovi 1986, is the definition of epic.

This was the year when Slippery When Wet came out in August, and it has “transitional setlists”, moving from July when You Give Love a Bad Name was still played as they did on their demo version;
To August with Livin’ On A Prayer, getting their on stage debut, and new tracks actually needing INTRODUCTIONS!;
To December when both Livin’ On A Prayer and You Give Love A Bad Name, had taken over the world and to selling out venues with ease.
And with fans who belted along.

1986 is a transitional year. A rare and special time, that should not be forgotten.
Because transitional times?
Well, they are the most potent ones.

And looking back on 1986, with Bon Jovi breaking through on a worldwide and absolutely irreversibele scale, we can really say;
And the rest, is history.

Bon Jovi
17 August 1985
Monsters of Rock
Donington festival, England 🇬🇧
🏟️
Fahrenheit Tour

A gig that, according to Jon Bon Jovi’s unofficial (but saintly!) biography by Laura Jackson, played a critical part in firing up the band to go for the top.
Donington was one of the earliest confirmations that they were destined to become the biggest stadium band the world had ever seen, as the book says:
“Richie Sambora reckons that it was that show that gave him a glimpse of things to come for Bon Jovi.”

And if it had not been for the @jane_jbj’s photo collage of what I would colorfully describe as a wriggling, humping, on his knees in hot pink Jon Bon Jovi;
Oh well, then this post would have been entirely dedicated to Richie Sambora.

It seemed inevitable.
Because I recently bought his two 90s cds.
And because a Richie Sambora fan reached out to me to compliment me on a piece I wrote on him, on my Rock Star Writer blog.

And because tonight there is a Richie Sambora premiere on the hAnD90 channel;
And because the fan who complimented me welcomed me to the Darkside!
A name the fans who chose Richie’s side of the stage on concerts gave themselves.

Richie has dark hair, whereas Jon has blond hair.
But the Darkside is a reference to Star Wars.
Since Richie’s departure from Bon Jovi, in 2013, there is no more luxury of such a choice between Jon’s light or Richie’s Darkside of the stage.

But the Darkside in Star Wars has become even more popular, after the sequel trilogy, released December 2015-December 2019.

The Darkside in Star Wars has really come to life since the sequel trilogy brought us “the darkside warrior Kylo Ren”, as one of the official art books  for The Force Awakens (2015) described him.
Kylo Ren, among other things, is the grandchild of Darth Vader both biologically, as well as visually in his black cloacked and helmed appearance.
But his stunning looks underneath the black apparel, are the spitting image of a Disney prince, and have nothing villain-esque about them.

So it was pretty much inevitable, that this post about Donington’s show in 1985, would feature Richie Sambora.
Inevitable, yes.
Until I saw the photos of Jon Bon Jovi on the Donington stage.

And until I saw the photo of fans climbing a blind fence, trying to get his autograph!

And heard the all-in, no holds barred attitude, that Jon Bon Jovi had brought to Donington.
And by now I ve heard enough 1984 and 1985 performances to know that he never failed to bring that.

An attitude that I knew I needed now more than ever!
Today, more than ever.

That was when I knew, not just on which side of the stage I belonged;
But also what this blogpost would be about.
Or more accurately;
About whom.

Ladies and gentlemen;
THIS is Jon Bon Jovi!

Tonight there is another premiere at the YouTube hAnD90 channel;
A part of fandom that above anything else, is known for its excellent remasters.
Where recordings you thought you’d never hear, can surface overnight.
With a description box so rich in information it would deserve a blogpost of its own.
All the tech specs are in there, the historical context is, and the setlists are pieces of art, with solos, speeches, covers, intros, mashups;
All separately spelled out and timestamped for your convenience.

Where team Bon Jovi is notorious for not being able to deliver live albums, YouTube fans are having one every week, from someone who is dependent on bootleg recordings and his spare time.

But a few years ago, these live premieres on the hAnD90 channel had something else;
Sexy live chats.
And they no longer have that.

Back in the day, we were not just allowed to be in admiration of music, but we were also allowed to let our imagination run wild.
To flirt, to tease, to speculate.
There was someone who would type:
“Ladies and gentlemen; THIS is Bon Jovi!” when the guitar solo was extremely impressive, Tico’s drumming pumped us up, or when Jon Bon Jovi put his entire soul into his singing.
But that no longer happens anymore either, nowadays.

In my opinion, it was the fact that the conversation could go all the way, that allowed us to fully experience and appreciate, the music.
And now that we keep it clean, we, or at least I, no longer feel it, to the degree I once did.

I don’t question today’s chat is a safer space, in particular because some of the fans are very young. So I can’t say I would want to go back, or that there is even an option for that.
But I miss the old days.

The “loose” days are no longer there, and although I have told myself I am okay with that, and still show up occasionally, on the live chat, in particular because I am appreciative of the community and the beautiful work hAnD90 delivers time after time;
Donington 1985, made me realize that I had lost that part in myself.
The loose part.

And even typing what I just did, in the paragraphs above:
“Until I saw the photos of Jon Bon Jovi on the Donington stage”
That was not what it said.
I cut off the second half of the sentence, because I didn’t want to get into trouble.

I didn’t want to be too much.

The past ten days or so, I am researching my options of blogging professionally.
I’ve been writing for a long time, under a different name. Yet I never looked into blogging professionally because professional bloggers are usually NOT making money from their writing.

They make money because they sell online services on the back of their blog, and these are very often their own online services or courses.
So they are not a blogger but an online entrepreneur.
Their WRITING is not making the money; the sale of products is.

But because I believe that in theory, blogging (without selling products or services from yourself or others; and without writing promotional posts)  should be able to make money;
I am investigating my options.
And at this stage the research question is:

Can I make money from the blogging which I already, automatically, and with my full heart and soul in it, do?

And a Plan B question should have been;
“If I can’t monetize my existing blogs, then can I make money by setting up a new, easy-to-read, high-value blog?
Neutral, professional,
family-friendly, and using content I already have?”

Which were all good research questions.
If I had not gotten frustrated within the first 5 minutes of every How To Monetize Your Blog webinar, and unsubscribed from all their lists vowing I would rather climb Donington’s 1985 corrugated fence in Jon’s pink leopard legging, than to take another professional blogging course ever again.

From now on, I would not touch the subject of professional blogging with a ten foot pole.

But then what to do with all my blog posts and blogs?

This week I got a meaty matter on my plate, regarding book publishing. A matter that may influence how I will move forward.
Which side of the writing spectrum I am choosing, and also, under which name I will be working.
So that was already buzzing in my head, and in my Inbox.
I need to take action, as well as possibly course correct.

If I would describe this week, pre-seeing the Donington show photos, I would say I was leaning towards cleaning up and professionalizing my writing.
Acknowledging the fact that if I want to keep writing these daily posts, they will have to start paying for themselves.

And then I saw those pictures.
The pictures that drew from me a sexy remark that I deleted, because I thought it was too sexual.
Yet Jon’s Donington pictures, were the full-color proof that there was no such thing, as being too sexual, when it came to rock n’ roll!

And suddenly I knew that I did not, belong on Richie’s side of the stage.
I was not, the brilliant singer-songwriter, whose musicality and voice have objectively always been stronger than Jon’s.

Instead, I identified with the throwing his full body into it, touching everything he could get his hands on, the sexually teasing and dancing, Jon Bon Jovi, side of the stage!

This week I also blogged about Japan 1986, the first concerts from the Slippery When Wet Tour. An album that had not even been released.

They were playing a concert with songs the audience didn’t know, and doing a tour with a name the audience didn’t recognize. Also because the album was originally scheduled to be called Wild In the Streets, in Japan.
Promotion for this Japan leg of the SWW Tour, had absolutely been less than ideal.
Jon:

“We went to Japan and we figured, no problem, we’ll do the Budokan.
It was a fucking stiff!
It was going to be a halfhouse.
So I did everything I could to get the kids in there.
You realize you’d give all that money back just to fill that hall.
Money doesn’t mean shit!

It was a humbling experience.”
[ source ]

There was my answer….
I did not aspire to go for the easy business model of getting paid for a half hall.
I wanted what Jon Bon Jovi described as:
“The high is to play to a sold out arena to people who really enjoy your music.”

More than money, I want to write for people who really enjoy my writing.

People you go the extra mile for.
People you wear pink skinny jeans for.
People you crawl for on your knees, and mount the stage for in a way so sweaty and so glorious, that they can’t help but shout out;

“Ladies and gentlemen; THIS is Jon Bon Jovi!”

👩🏼‍💻 the story August 15

..

Yesterday I said Bon Jovi would not romanticize Japan 1986, but I have to eat my words! This beautiful photo was tweeted by JBJ in 2021. “Still staring out the window wanting to go back to Japan. #TBT Tokyo, 1986.” Source Instagram, click the photo for the source.

The recorded concerts of the very first leg of the Slippery When Wet Tour, a leg during which the album had either;
-just been released
-was released a few days before the international release
or
-was released on the exact same date as Wikipedia will tell you it did;

On THAT leg of the tour, Japan 1986, there are 5 concerts unrecorded (or just a few songs uploaded to YouTube) and 5 concerts are recorded in full.

The recorded concerts of the 1986 Japan leg of the Slippery When Wet tour, are:
August 12, Fukuoka
August 13, Osaka first night
August 14, Osaka second night
August 16, Kobe
August 18, Tokyo

August 18th was the official release date for the Slippery When Wet album, but when you listen to these concerts you will hear the following:

This was when, after all the photo sessions that had taken place when the album would still have a cowboy theme (and be called Wanted Dead or Alive);
After the photo sessions with the band and seven women in hotpants and crop tops soaping and hosing down fast cars;

And after a studio photo of women’s hands holding a soapy bar of Slippery When Wet soap;

Or they had, because their album Slippery When Wet was already finished;

On Osaka second night, they played 6 out of 17 songs, from Slippery When Wet, and other nights were similar.
But Livin’ On A Prayer wasn’t played on either one of the 5 concerts.

That moment in time Bad Name still required an introduction | 14 August | Bon Jovi 14 August 1986, Osaka, Japan | Festival Hall (second night)

Sunday 14 August

Bon Jovi

Slippery When Wet Tour

Bon Jovi’s third album, and the one that would be their worldwide breakthrough, Slippery When Wet, was released on the day of this show.
Yet a third of all the songs that were performed, were from that album. And the other songs were from the first two albums.

You can clearly hear the band working hard to get their new material accepted, and explicitly announcing the hit songs from the first two albums,  to keep momentum going!
Which the crowd rewards by cheering loudly for those.
Wanted Dead or Alive has a low-key spot in the encore, and no one makes much fuss about it.

A show on eve of their worldwide fame.

.

That moment in time Bad Name still required an introduction

👩🏼‍💻 the story August 14

.
There is a certain romanticism, in not yet being where you are. In not “having it”, “being it”, and “being there”, wherever there is.
But it is almost always “hindsight” romanticism, the type you or other people appreciate after you have the diploma, or already rocking your dream job.
The hindsight romanticism of looking back on being single, on struggling, on overcoming obstacles that are now faint memories or good stories.

Needless to say, at the moment itself, there is usually little romantic about it. And anxiety, stress and frustration are much more prevalent.

However I believe that for Bon Jovi, when looking back at those first years – and in particular the year 1985 when their second album Fahrenheit dropped, and did not do what it was supposed to do – I think Bon Jovi does not have those romantic feelings.
Not to 1985, and not to August 1986, when they played Osaka on the day their album Slippery When Wet was released. Jon mentions this release, during the show before he starts You Give Love a Bad Name.
And he tells the crowd that You Give Love a Bad Name, will be its first single.

Of course we all know how it ended.
Slippery When Wet became their biggie, and the first two albums would lose their relevance.
In this August 1986 performance of You Give Love A Bad Name, they even tie the “Shot Through The Heart” sentence (from Bad Name), to the song on their first album, which was titled Shot Through The Heart.
So they make it into a combo-
First Bad Name, which they end on a “Shot through the heart!”
And then immediately, the piano intro to the song “Shot Through The Heart” from their debut album.

If you want, you can listen to both the intro to Bad Name as well as to the hard cut to Shot Through The Heart, with the setlist in the description box with time stamps from the YouTube upload.

And today, as I was doing my yoga with this 1986 concert, and I was plagued not so much by frustration, about how far off my practice is from where I want it to be;
But I was very much aware of this contrast, between reality and my dreams.

I was very aware, that although I have my health, although I have my experience as a yoga teacher, and the deep personal meaning yoga has always had for me;
I am absolutely nowhere near, my dreams.

Since 2019, I have often been so very close, as if I could almost touch it!
But it never worked. The vision disappeared, as soon as I started execution.
And since then I have stayed far, far too long in many variations of making-an-album-that-didn’t-work.

After last week’s decision to quit making yoga videos, or quit trying, to make yoga videos, since I was wasting days without actually producing anything usable, I have felt my true aim return.
And I understood why making yoga videos had not worked, and
I will pick up making videos, but the yoga themed ones need to go back to the drawing board.

I also understood my Why, my true dream when it came to yoga.
Which had not changed since the day I got inspired to pick up yoga all those years ago!!
It had not changed, and yet I had lost it over and over. Constantly trying to alter it to something what was common, for a yoga student, or for a yoga teacher.
And I lost this stable, unchanging yoga dream.
Mind bloggling.

Also because I can now see that I will not be the only one. That the current yoga offerings are incomplete, that this part is not covered.
And that this part I can teach, will teach, shall teach!
And most of all: What I will practice, for myself.

After I quit making yoga videos I could finally see what this Slippery When Wet sized “biggie” was. What positive had been lying beneath my failure. Beneath all the things that over and over, had not worked.

I can’t even speak about it right here, right now.
Sunday night 11 P.M. – and I cut my yoga short so I could at least write a blogpost today.
But the short yoga practice, as well as this blog post, which feels emotional and heavy;
Neither are good for my self-esteem.

Tonight, is not the time to introduce my Slippery When Wet album, or my “You Give Love A Bad Name”, to you.
Today, was just a day to get through, and realize I m still so very far away, from where I want to be.

Just like Bon Jovi, I will not look back on it with romantic ideas about “being at the beginning”. Because nor Bon Jovi mid-1986, nor me mid-2022, are at the beginning of anything.

We are in a place where we assumed we could have, should have, would have, figured it out by now.
And know that the only way out of this, is by moving forward.

Even when that means, having to apologize for playing what will very soon be your number 1 song, that will change the your destiny.
Especially, then:
Move forward!

There are 2 different options, which in helicopter view are:

option 1. (guided or with Bon Jovi music)
Choose a yoga playlist from one specific teacher or do yoga on your own with Bon Jovi music, themed by days of the week.

Updated daily with the most recent date at the top.

Bootleggers roll your tapes | 12 August | Bon Jovi 28 June 1996, Cologne Germany | Müngersdorfer Stadion (first night)

Jon Bon Jovi 1996 08 28 Cologne 1st night, click for credit, tweet by @jane_jbj

Friday 12 August

The soundtrack of the day is:
Bon Jovi
28 June 1996, Cologne, Germany 🇩🇪

Müngersdorfer Stadion
🏟️Crossroad/ These Days Tour

What a Friday when you have this amazing new upload on the hAnD90 channel!
A concert which is a serious contender for the best concert Bon Jovi ever gave,
yet was sorely missing on YouTube.

Special praise for the acoustic set, including an uncannily romantic sounding I’d Die For You.

Bootleggers roll your tapes

👩🏼‍💻 the story August 12

I started this series on June 10th;
We did not have this concert to choose from, at the time.
Although the second night did make it as soundtrack of the day.
{archive: The Morning After | 1 July | Bon Jovi 29 June 1996, Cologne, Germany, Müngersdorfer Stadion (second night)

To give a bit of context to the some of the “disturbances in The Force” you may have noticed 😉
A prolific Bon Jovi channel by the name of Bon Jovi Live Concerts (who owns multiple channels now, to avoid tragedies like this happening) was taken down or hacked about five months ago.
This was a bloodletting to the available Bon Jovi content on YouTube, and since then many previously available concerts are no longer online.
You can find the new main channel from Bon Jovi live concerts here.
They will keep you posted on which other channels to follow, as they use multiple accounts to spread any risks.

It is possible that Cologne first night, used to be up on YouTube, pre-tragedy.
It is also possible that hAnD90’s remaster was the first time it got uploaded.
No way to tell!
But we’re happy to have her, so to speak.

I have added it to my “Best Of” list; A public playlist on my channel that is in such a deplorable state that I probably should not have shared it! 😅
One day I expect to make it proper.

Tweet by tweet, DM by DM, and chat by chat, I’m getting to know the background to these uploads and the people who upload them a little bit more.
And this has allowed me to get a whole new level of excitement and admiration when new shows are uploaded;
And new levels of remorse and anger, when things are destroyed.

Bon Jovi as a band has always acknowledged bootleggers, and has honored their presence in their 90s shows.
“Bootleggers roll your tapes!” they said before playing an exclusive.
And their efforts have resulted in an extensive YouTube legacy, where the history of other bands (in particular those who have actively been taking things down) was lost in time.

So Bon Jovi fans and the band as well, definitely got the long end of the stick, and profit to this day from the band’s decision to be “bootleggers inclusive”.
In fact it was so successful, that the term bootlegger, was pretty much lost in time as well!

With the coming of the mobile phone, we all became bootleggers.
Which is the ultimate emancipation.

And even when we don’t feel like attending a concert, filming and recording for hours in a row, we can support those who do.
Past and present.

So today is August 12!
Let’s dive in: What is suggested as your #dailybonjoviyoga for today?

🧘🏽🤘🏽#dailybonjoviyoga

There are 2 different options, which in helicopter view are:

option 1. (guided or with Bon Jovi music)
Choose a yoga playlist from one specific teacher or do yoga on your own with Bon Jovi music, themed by days of the week.

The “freestyle” (do yoga on your own) option, is the only option where you can listen to Bon Jovi.
The two other options are guided practices.
Which MIGHT be possible to follow along, while having an acoustic I’d Die For You playing solemnly on the background;
But in general, I assume you’re either going for a guided practice OR yoga with Bon Jovi music.

option 2. (guided)
pick one of the programs

option I:  themed day by day

Every day of the week, the Rock Star Yoga/ #dailybonjoviyoga is themed differently:

Monday: Find What Feels Good
do yoga with:🥤 Yoga with Adriene channel
or playlist 1: 🍭 Yoga with Adriene – selection
or playlist 2:🌱Yoga with Adriene Yoga for New Beginnings
or do hatha yoga (on your own) with 🚧Slippery When Wet album🚧 or 🏟️Slippery When Wet tour🌎

Tuesday, showtime! New Jersey Syndicate Tour
do yoga with: 🕉️Ashtanga Yoga and  🏹 Rocket Yoga playlist
or freestyle (on your own) with 🇺🇸New Jersey album🫐🟦 or 🏟️New Jersey Syndicate tour🌎

Wednesday:  🌵🏜️🏍️Santa Fe Day 🦅🏜️🌵
choose a yin yoga/ relaxation video from the yoga playlist
or do relaxing yoga (on your own) with 🏜️Blaze of Glory album🏍️
OR (new!) do yoga (on your own) with the live Dry County and Santa Fe playlist!

Thursday, showtime! Keep the Faith/ I ll Sleep When I m Dead Tour
do yoga with: 🌊Shiva Rea playlist
or buy her 1999 double album 2h practice, Yoga Sanctuary
or freestyle (on your own) with 🛐 Keep the Faith album✝️ or the 🏟️KTF tour🌎

Friday: 🍻 An Evening With Bon Jovi🎤
do yoga with: 💃🏽 Tara Stiles playlist
or do hatha yoga (on your own) with a few songs from the Cross Road album or An Evening With Bon Jovi

Saturday: Showtime! Cross Road/ These Days Tour

{ Friday August 12 }

Every Friday my two programs (28 day and 7 day) suggest a Tara Stiles video.
Tara Stiles was in all probability the first “real” YouTube yoga teacher;
As she started around 2006, supported by her model agency Ford.
Ever since she has published many books, created dvds, and of course countless yoga videos.
She currently teaches STRALA yoga; and offers classes as well as teacher trainings online and in person.

Friday: 🍻 An Evening With Bon Jovi🎤
do yoga with: 💃🏽 Tara Stiles playlist
or do hatha yoga (on your own) with a few songs from the Cross Road album or An Evening With Bon Jovi

My personal practice today, was yoga with An Evening With Bon Jovi (1h:10m:50s), including a lot of relaxing poses, and a lot of cat cuddling.
This week, 3 people or organizations I follow on social media, all lost a cat.
So I feel very grateful to have mine healthy, and disturbing my yoga practice.

This specific upload An Evening With Bon Jovi (1h:10m:50s), seems to have cut out the intro and in-between bits, and is shorter than another version out there which is almost 15 minutes longer.
From what I could see, no songs were missing.

Homecoming blogpost

👩🏼‍💻 the story August 9

.

Press conference August 1988 for the album they named after their homestate: New Jersey 📸  Mark Weiss

Welcome to this Daily Bon Jovi blog!
A blog which was recently paused for a week long sabbatical + a weekend off, which would be standard from now on.
And now, after a few days, I’m back already.
So… what happened, right?

Well, last weekend I concluded my new, second career in yoga, “Rock Star Yoga” (or Bon Jovi Yoga) – the one I’ve known for like forever (2019) that it would come one day, that one –
that this new career appeared to require a blogless week to streamline my production process.
*insert stern looking emoji*

Now this second career in yoga was not going to be tied to the pre-Covid yoga for friends, that I still had before the pandemic.
I did (and do) count on that to return one day, when I have a spacious living, or house, or access to a common room in my building.
I still count on the opportunity to pick up teaching yoga to friends, which then would also start including Bon Jovi friends of course!, to appear out of thin air.
Whenever the universe thinks the time is right, it will show up.

But Yoga for Friends was not the new yoga career I needed a sabbatical for. No, a newly rockin’ Yoga for Friends was not why I from now on needed to clear my weekends from blogging, in order to regroup and recover and be able to pull it off another week!
No.

As sort of a PS, a bonus, a GIVEAWAY NO-BRAINER RED FLAG?!
If you’re contemplating a new career or a big project, and announce to your dearest of dear you need a week off to pull this off?
Let me then now be the bearer of both great and probably terrifying news when I say that you do not need any sort of time off.
Instead you need to ditch that thing you think is your purpose and your calling, and throw it in the deep end of the Delaware river, to never be seen or heard of again!

Because if it was your purpose?
You’d be DOING it.
You’d be IN IT.
It would take wild horses to drag you away, if it really was your purpose work.

I could go back to my original setup of paragraphs here.
And explain how wonderful yoga on my YouTube channels would have been;
How at home we’d all feel in this Bon Jovi yoga community that we ourselves would create.
But there really is no point to go into details, of something that is not going to happen.

My plan to start two YouTube yoga channels, and thereby pick up my old work as a yoga teacher, and to let these channels be complementary to this #dailybonjoviyoga blog;
It was not the right plan.

Whereas the 30 days of unplanned, manic, terribly time consuming, “no idea how to find an audience for this” blogging extravaganza about Bon Jovi concerts and yoga playlists, and theming days after tours, and assigning playlists from different teachers to each day;
And writing endless stories here on this blog, day after day after day, from Juny 10 to July 10?
Oh that, was the real deal.

Everyday I was absorbed in writing, my whole mind had become one with this blog. My life was tied to it!
And when I went to Guns N’ Roses, I took three days off, but afterward I just continued writing about Guns N’ Roses, and it fit perfectly….
In fact, it improved the Bon Jovi Yoga system I had developed.

So this blogpost is my homecoming.
This is me saying:
Yes, I am a yoga “teacher” but all I teach is my love for yoga, and my love for Bon Jovi, and my love for Guns N’ Roses, and for attending concerts.
But I am, at heart, a writer.
Not a YouTuber.

Writing is my wild horses couldn’t drag me away activity, and I do not need planned days off to recover from it.
Let alone that I would need to clear my calendar for the week, to sit behind my desk and write.
I ll write even when I have a full calendar, and show up late at dates. Or even feel slightly grumpy (which I then coach myself out of) because I had to leave my desk.

If you re still reading this, I think I can share this with you, because it is a great story;
During that month of blogging I had the best sex of my life.
I immediately knew why that had happened: Because I was writing for this blog every day.
And a few weeks ago, a time when I should have felt amazing because I had  finally solved a big problem with my apartment and all the personal effects that had ended up blocking my living room, were finally in their correct place;
I had sex again. Which should have been great because after a year of this complicated issue, I finally had my house in order! My life could start including filming from my living room!
But the sex didn’t even come close to what had happened one month prior…
In fact: It was hard work.

Just like making yoga videos in that wonderful, cleared out and upgraded living room was hard work.

If I can teach you anything about yoga, my type of yoga, the yoga that I think the world needs more of, and that you may be interested in, and that I have no idea how to teach but it’s not through making yoga videos:
Then it is that that yoga?
Should not be hard work.

Yoga should not be something you need to clear your calendar for, but it should be something you can’t NOT do.
You should be drawn to it, like Bon Jovi fans to the newest hAnD90 uploads. And click Play because you’re just dying with curiosity!

Wild horses could not drag you away.

THAT is the feeling you should be looking for.
That, is your homecoming.

Blog on the backseat. | 1 week sabbatical | Bon Jovi 4-12 August 1984 (!), Japan | Super Rock festivals

Welcome to this renewed and rebooted daily Bon Jovi blog!
Also the complementary blog for  #dailybonjoviyoga on YouTube
A new YouTube series which…. is requiring some extra attention, to say the least!

This week’s filming for both that YouTube, as well as its Dutch equivalent, has resulted in many missed days here on the blog, many late nights, many yoga videos thrown away.

But it has also resulted in an always spotless house, so that I can film, and (the result we were waiting for) three videos posted!
Two English and one Dutch.
Three, when my total is supposed to be six.

So what I have decided on, is:
I will take weekends off from blogging.
+
Take a one week sabbatical from this blog.

This will allow me to setup and streamline a solid production routine for my English and Dutch YouTube channels.
Last week’s “Just do it”-dive in approach has taught me many lessons, about best , the only time to film which is daytime;
About the camera angle, the format or weekly formula.
It taught me that the maximum temperature for filming is 25℃ (77℉)
So in these summer months I will need to plan filming around weather forecasts.

This first week of filming also taught me you cannot catch up on Friday, when you’re three videos behind on your schedule, if you have gone out on Thursday.
That was also, a good lesson to remember.

So all in all, it was a learning week with 50% output I hoped for on the channels, a 50% decline here on this blog, and flatlining on all creative endeavors.

Teaching yoga and making videos, both come far less natural to me than writing. In fact they even cost me more effort than deciphering Bon Jovi’s 1984 tour of Japan, which already cost me two days of tweeting about it incorrectly, before I had finally cracked it!

The very popular 25 minute long Japan 1984 recording that you have probably seen a gazzilion times?
That is taken from the final Super Rock show, on 12th of August, in Tokyo.

Whereas the 45 minute audio-only upload, is the very first of this Japanese tour, on August 4, in Nogaya.

Therefor:

   Japan🇯🇵
4 August 1984, Nagoya
🎬📽️ Bon Jovi Live Japan 1984

and
12 August 1984, Tokyo
🎤🎧🎛️ Bon Jovi in Nagoya – Super Rock ’84 In Japan – 1984
are the soundtracks for today

The shows were added together, to the playlist
“Bon Jovi concerts on this day”
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiGoDE3C06ScAo9UN4GyhtQWYfl3d6jMT
at 4 August.

Want to stay in touch with these soundtracks the upcoming week?
I will keep sharing an “on this day” Bon Jovi concert, on Twitter and Rock Star Writer on Facebook, and add them to the playlist..

And next week’s yoga videos will also be inspired by on-this-day concerts.

🌎#dailybonjoviyoga  international: English YouTube
🇳🇱#dailybonjoviyoga Dutch: Nederlandse YouTube

Note to my🌎 YouTube subscribers!

I do intend to pick up filming for my Life lessons in Bon Jovi songs as well.
This was my series on YouTube before I started filming yoga, so I plan on running them both.
And have not become a yoga-only channel.

If you’re not interested in joining me for yoga, then I hope you like the first minutes of every yoga video.
Where I talk about a Bon Jovi concert that was held on that day.

🧘🏼‍♀️🤘🏽Back to the mat

I will also be using the upcoming “Japan-tour-length” sabbatical to get back to my mat for my own personal practice.
Originally the making of the videos was supposed to be a daily thing.
And to replace my personal practice.

But as I changed the filming of yoga videos from daily to 3 a week for every channel, I will be picking up my own yoga.
And follow the 7-day schedule I designed about 7 weeks ago.

If you want to follow along, here is it:

—🤘🏾🧘🏾 🎶🎸 that was your practice 🤘🏾🧘🏾 🎶🎸—

So here I am.
11.15 PM after my first week of filming (and failing), and feeling a bit blue.
Probably understandably.

If you ve read all the way down to the bottom here, I can confide in you that part of me is still unsure if I m really meant to be teaching yoga, when I AM obviously a writer.
If I should not just call it a day, and leave being a proper yoga teacher on YouTube to the Yoga with Adrienes and Boho Beautiful’s of this world.
Who seem like they are unbothered by their desk, their keyboard, their purpose work calling them.
In fact, they seem as if their yoga on camera IS their purpose work.

When I can assure you:
Mine is not.
My purpose – the work I am here for and that need to do so I can die peacefully one day, without regrets – is not teaching yoga.

But then I come back to something I think I mentioned in an earlier blog, or in the video I made on a Friday one week ago;
Your purpose, in all probability, is not yoga either..

But you are aware you have one. You, and for many reasons I think this is Bon Jovi related, YOU know you have a purpose.
You know you didn’t come here to f* around, and you are as hellbent to live into what you were born for, as Bon Jovi 1984 from 4 to 12 August in Japan.

So this blog, the YouTube channels, and even my own time on the yoga mat, are really not about yoga at all.
Yoga is just a vessel, a means to an end.
Yoga is something we can do to connect and communicate (yes), but mostly, yoga is a way to remember who we are.
And what we came here to do.

You living into your purpose;
That is the yoga I can teach you.

Cut it short. | 4 August | Bon Jovi 4 August 1989, East Troy, Wisconsin | Alpine Valley Music Theatre

Welcome to this renewed and rebooted daily Bon Jovi blog!
Also the complementary blog for  #dailybonjoviyoga on YouTube. which I started this week, together with daily bon jovi yoga in Dutch on my Dutch channel.
So bear with me!

Adding 6 yoga videos a week to my daily blogging schedule has resulted in way more videos in the trash can than those posted;
But I m definitely getting there!

Within two weeks tops, I expect to have both the YouTube channels as well as this blog, rolling more smoothly than there are cover songs weaved into the live version of Sleep When I’m Dead.

Normally I write you a story, but today I m not going to write anything.

I have to cut it short, because I have five minutes left to get this blog out.
So no story.
Which is fitting because the show in East Troy on August 4 was also cut short!

Therefor:

4 August 1989, East Troy, Wisconsin 🇺🇸
Bon Jovi | Live at Alpine Valley Music Theatre | East Troy 1989
is the soundtrack for today

The show is added to the playlist
