The concert part!
What concerts were played on July 5?

🗓️🎶🎸Bon Jovi July 5.

Jon before concert RDS Arena. Click photo for original by @jane_jbj on twitter

There is no pre-1997 concert recording for July 5;
So I m appointing a recording that has not been a soundtrack of the day yet:
2 July 1995:

Cross Road/ These Days Tour
2 July 1995, Dublin, Ireland, RDS Arena
YouTube upload:

Bon Jovi | Live at RDS Arena | Dublin 1995
A remastered recording by hAnD90.
Tech specifics in description box of the video.

Dublin was the final concert from the European tour, and Jane shared two clippings from two interviews Jon gave before the show:
1.news item + Jon on having a good time in Dublin
2.Jon on the influence of Irish musician Phil Lynnott, on their work

The 1995 Dublin show was a fantastic show!
And an absolute worthy closer for the European leg of the tour.

From the description box, by hAnD90:

“The band and the crowd are in a great mood as it’s usually the case in Dublin.
Jon does some nice ad-libs over the outro of Runaway and even considers moving to Ireland due to him being so impressed by the enthusiastic crowd.
Just like in Jakarta, the band delivers a mesmerizing rendition of Never Say Goodbye with them starting out slow and the band bursting in by the time the solo comes around and Richie taking the song home!”

Therefor:

2 JuLY 1995, Dublin, Ireland🇮🇪
Bon Jovi | Live at RDS Arena | Dublin 1995

is the soundtrack for today

The show may not, go on.

👩🏼‍💻 the story July 5

“As you can tell, I am having a few issues, these shows are really important to us, I slept here last night.
So I’ll be switching the songs around vocally, I hope you don’t mind. I’d really like to keep going.”

Axl Rose, Tottenham (second night), 2 July 2022

Before Guns N Roses came to the Netherlands, on June 23;
I had about 15 months between buying the ticket and the show, to worry about all that could go wrong.
Groningen, The Netherlands was one of the extra concerts, and had not been included in the original 2020 European tour.
So I had a new ticket, for a new show, and not a rescheduled one.

But would there even be a show?
Or w
ould the pandemic still be keeping bands from touring in 2022?
On February 24, 2022, a day before the Dutch Covid measures were lifted, the war started in Ukraine.
Hardly anybody in The Netherlands was worrying about Covid anymore.

The first nights I heard what I can only identify as military aircrafts, passing over Nijmegen.
And there seemed to be an unusual amount of activity in the woodlands between The Netherlands and Germany; a side of the city that is normally dead quiet.

For the first month of the war, I thought it highly unlikely, that European airspace would stay open, for a band to tour the continent.
If aside from Ukraine, a few more countries would be at war or if their airspace was no longer open, European tours would be cancelled.
I estimated 85-95% of shows would need to go on as planned, for a tour to remain profitable.

Luckily, for obviously more and better reasons than for us enjoying concerts, the war did not spread further over Europe, and all bands including Guns N Roses, started touring Europe.
As planned.

Last night Rammstein gave a show at Goffertpark in Nijmegen, and from outside it sounded great and the show was absolutely spectacular!!
And their second show is scheduled for tonight.
With the Guns N Roses concert in Groningen, having been the best day of my entire life;
And the Red Hot Chili Peppers also having visited Nijmegen, last month!
It is easy to think that things are back to normal.

But far from it.

Last night, Guns N Roses cancelled their Glasgow concert for tonight, and I found out this morning, that the Red Hot Chili Peppers too, had cancelled their Glasgow concert for July 1st.
Both due to medical reasons.

And just last month, the Rolling Stones had to cancel both
Switzerland and The Netherlands, although the last one could be swiftly rescheduled to July 7.
And the Red Hot Chili Peppers too, are back, they only missed one show.

But it shows that it is indeed a small miracle, to have these bands touring the world. And it’s probably something we have been taking for granted.

Covid brought us a realization that global circumstances can interfere with touring schedules. And keep us from enjoying concerts and festivals.
But these first summer months where everything is up and running again, also show us something else;
The human factor.

You can’t compare cancelled 80s and 90s concerts with today’s:
Covid legislation still makes it likely to have shows cancelled when they test positive, when in the 80s and 90s, far worse conditions would be covered up with strong medical interventions.
The show had to go on, and it did, in those decades.
So a band cancelling for medical reasons in 2022, can mean anything.

But there is another reason why cancellations may come more easily, aside from positive Covid testing:
The vulnerability of these artists.

They’re older now, they have to take better care of their health. They re way healthier than back in the day!
But also more professional, less destructive, and wiser, when it comes to health.
More powerful too I reckon; They make the decisions, not managers.

But there is another vulnerability, because contrary to the 20th century, everything is being recorded.
Everything is registered.
If you go up on stage, you know that whatever it is you do up there, you will have people watching it for years to come.

Guns N Roses final two shows, in Tottenham, were both cut short and Axl informed the crowd of his struggles.
He sung the songs differently, but now Glasgow is cancelled.

Jon Bon Jovi too, is having severe struggles with his voice.
Bon Jovi had a short tour in April, but it is unclear what the future holds, and if Bon Jovi will ever tour again.

So I think the old Show Must Go On adage, does hold a different meaning now.
Perhaps even;
No meaning.

That we’ll see bands cancelling, when they can’t risk damaging their voice even more;
Can’t risk not taking the time to recover properly.
Can’t risk, having their reputation damaged by the many recordings that will be available after their show.

And that if we do see them, on stage, and in particular if we see them there struggling;
Then let’s be grateful, that they dare to go out there and meet us.
Because it’s a vulnerable position these days.

Covid may have dropped to the background for now,
and the war may be contained in the east;
But the years of pattern interrupt, and the decades of aging, and all the political and pandemic ebs and flows;
They have shown us that the show no longer, automatically, goes on.

And perhaps that, in itself, is a good thing.
