a unique school of yoga, with long, prescribed series of poses. Like the long New Jersey tour it has brought many to breaking point!
Ashtanga yoga was one of the first yogas to reach America. Around since the 70s, not understood until this day;)
A very rock star story about Ashtanga yoga is that it was practiced by the Grateful Dead, who brought their ashtanga yoga teacher Larry Schultz on tour with them, in the 90s. Together with Bob Weir from the Grateful Dead, Larry Schultz developed Rocket Yoga.

Symbolism and alignment
👩🏼💻 the story June 21
A new daily blogging series, about Bon Jovi AND yoga?
No surprise that on day 12, I still feel like I m in startup mode and pulling my weight just setting it up.
I also have two YouTube channels where I ve been looking for ages how to share Rock Star Yoga/ #dailybonjoviyoga…
And although I felt so called to invent and teach “Rock Star Yoga” (I ve been a yoga teacher for 15 years + and have a YouTube database filled with hundreds of my own yoga videos)
I have been unsuccessful in the past, bringing it to life.
Every time I started filming I dropped out, because I knew it was not 100% aligned.
I could feel, wrestling my way through making and posting those videos, that my heavy lifting was me putting in work, to compensate something that wasn’t right.
Something was not, in alignment.
Alignment is a term best known from astronomy, and 5 planets were in alignment last night.
Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.
The last time that happened was 18 years ago, and it’s always difficult to see them. You need clear weather.
Since I do not know anything about astronomy, or astrology, I cannot tell you anything more about it.
I do know significantly more about movies though!
And I can tell you that planetary alignment plays an important role in the movie Tomb Raider 2001, with Angelina Jolie.
Where she stares at the sky with a gigantic telescope at an alignment of 9 planets that happens every 5000 years.
In yoga the word alignment means how, you do the pose.
If your knee is straight over your ankle, in Warrior Pose, that sort of thing.
As a yoga teacher, that is not something I m invested in, to be honest.
But the word alignment is also used in the personal development world, and there it means something way more personal and relevant.
Something way more empowering.
Alignment FOR YOU.
One of the reasons I think planning, getting things done – and even doing yoga to counter balance working on someone else’s agenda, and feeling overwhelmed – are questionable solutions, is because they could be covering up that you are out of alignment.
That the life you are living is not in alignment with your goals, your dreams, and perhaps even prevents you from stepping into your identity.
Feeling you have to be someone you’re not, in order to do things you don’t want to, is something we should all fear and run from, faster than from the devil himself.
On the other side, if you are IN alignment, and ON purpose?
No matter how hard something is, you’ll do it.
Your identity will just form itself around it.
When you ARE fan of a band, you WILL get tickets.
Hell or highwater, you will get a day off, and perhaps you are even so big of a fan that you’ll wait for hours in advance, and even go for a day without food, water or toilet, if that’s what it takes to get first row.
There is zero resistance, because you are 100% in alignment with who you are (who you identify as being);
And it is in alignment with your values, your priorities.
Keep that in mind the next time you feel resistance:
Is it because the thing you are making yourself do, is absolutely not the direction you want to take in life?
Are you out of alignment?
Because if you were in alignment, it could take hundreds of dollars, an entire day in the sun with hardly water, food or toilet, and you’d still do it.
Maybe that is why I have little interest in alignment IN the yoga pose:
If you are on purpose, doing yoga; If you FEEL it, and YOU RE IN it, in the same way you feel it and are totally in it when you visit a concert;
Who cares about the little things.
You re either in alignment and on purpose; Or you re not, and then micromanaging your position is not going to improve it.
It is like finding ways to “perfectly” wait in line, in the heat, for your Billie Eilish concert; When you are a Guns N Roses fan.
When you feel resistance, it’s likely you re standing in your version of the line for a Billie Eilish concert.
You don’t need to tweak that, you need to get out.
I spent the morning aligning our yoga schedule, by adding emojis/ symbols to visualize things like yoga, music, tour, concert, New Jersey.
And I realized how much better symbols work, than words.
But that I needed those 11 days of blogging, and those thousands of words, to get to this day 12, of being able to add the symbols to the days, music and yoga.
I needed to expand, and go big, before I was able to cull, simplify, and symbolize.
Most yoga systems are exactly the opposite.
They will learn you one thing, one exercise, one series, and tell you to expand from that.
You will never hear me say such a thing, for more reasons that one, but alignment is one of them.
Do the things you can digest more of than all the other people you know. That suck you in deeper and deeper, every time.
The things you can’t NOT do.
Because everyone can do something small, for 5 minutes.
Doing something small comes with a huge risk of doing something that is not FOR YOU.
Everyone can listen to one Billie Eilish song, but only if Billie Eilish holds a deeper meaning for you, and truly resonates with who you are, will you listen on repeat and go to her concerts.
Nothing is ever “just” that thing. Just like an emoji is not just an emoji.
Everything means something, symbolizes something.
The things in your life are not just activities (like yoga), or bands (like Guns N Roses), or interests;
They communicate a message, that you are absolutely fascinated with. They represent something that you deeply value. You are in a conversation with these things you love.
The things that matter to you most, symbolize who you are, and they contain the meaning of life. Time and other resources spent on them, will always be an intensely satisfying experience.
They are always, in perfect alignment, not just every 18 years, or every 5000 years, and not just when the sky is clear.
Everyday you are in perfect alignment, with the things you love.
