Unlocked after 30 years: The Woodlands, Texas, 1993 | Bon Jovi 1993 07 11 Richie’s Birthday | New on YouTube

For those sensitive to rhythm, logic and symbolism, there is an irresistible rhythm, to the Keep the Faith Tour.
All dates were set within one calendar year, from the snow of Canada’s opening shows in February, all year and the globe around, and then ending as it had started;
With a Canadian Tour in November, December and wrapping up with their fourth annual Christmas concert in Redbank, in December 1993

Many parts of the tour were done twice; The first early in the year, with  indoor venues, and then a second round in summer, visiting open air sites.
The Woodlands, Texas, is one of them, as North America was toured twice as well.

Although The Woodlands, 1993 was known by bootleg collectors, the recording was unknown to the general public.
But after 30 years it has now been remastered by hAnD90 and posted to YouTube on September 9th 2023.

Bon Jovi | Live at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion | The Woodlands 1993

The show takes place on Richie Sambora’s birthday, which is commemorated twice:
Jon welcoming the crowd at 12:12 to “the biggest birthday party you’ll ever get invited to.”
And 1:22:15 to sing Happy Birthday with the crowd, and quite well!
But did I just hear Jon shave off a few years, his “31st” birthday when it should have been 34th?
Or is it “21st” birthday, as kind of a joke because that is not true?

I’m known for being fallible in understanding what Jon says. Even for the tag line of this blog, They say that to really free the body, you gotta free your mind, a spoken word intro from the album version of Lay Your Hands On Me;
I think I consulted as many other fans as possible!
So maybe I am hallucinating and Jon did say Richie’s 34th.

Either way, there was a party!!

Classic 1993 setlist with Blood Money and Blaze of Glory from Jon’s 1990 album Blaze of Glory, both would stay regulars on the 1995 tour.
The Texas crowd treats us to Wanted; Dead or Alive.
They sing the entire first verse!

But hands down the best part of Richie’s Birthday show in Texas 1993, is the third (!) encore;
Two songs, entirely acoustic.

Starting with a merry cover of Southside Johnny’s I Don’t Wanna Go Home and then everyone’s favorite ballad, Never Say Goodbye. Where Jon adds such beautiful heartfelt lyrics to the outro, you may want to keep a box of tissues handy.

This third and closing encore, is so intimate you really feel like you were one of the 700 lucky ones catching them on one of their pre-tour gigs late 1992,
as mentioned in the previous blogpost.
Instead of one of the 16.500 attendees at the open-air venue of Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.

Richie’s and Jon’s harmonies in the closer of this birthday show, the acoustic Never Say Goodbye, just cut through right through your heart.

To the part that will always stay 21 years old.

Mannheim Monsters of Rock, Germany | Bon Jovi 1986 08 31 | Concerts on this day

Soundtrack of the day:

Bon Jovi
31 August 1986
Mannheim, Germany🇩🇪
🏟️Slippery When Wet Tour

🎛️🎶🎧->
https://youtu.be/vrfw8oyCeNc?si=B1gqNnzeSMBG0zTL

Mannheim was part of a two day festival Monsters of Rock;
they performed 30 August in Nurnberg and 31 August in Mannheim.

The two day stop-over in Europe was scheduled in between Japan (first leg of the Slippery When Wet Tour) and the United States, where they’d be heading next.
Bon Jovi would return to Europe in December.

Final non-megastar concert

👩🏼‍💻 the story 31 August

When pinpointing Bon Jovi’s worldwide breakthrough to mega superstars,  there really is only one place to land;
1986

Even Jon Bon Jovi once posted a 1986 photo, sitting in a hotel room in Japan August 1986.
The caption referred to the fact that he had not known the band was on the cusp of their big breakthrough.
The mega success, they had been fighting for ever since Jon Bon Jovi scored his solo hit Runaway, and founded the band in the months after.

I once got asked which Bon Jovi concert I would have loved to attend, if given a chance. Without batting an eyelash answered;
“Arnhem 1986!”
A December concert on a short November/December European tour, that took them through the UK and the continent.
By November, You Give Love A Bad Name had become a world wide hit as well as the follow up single Livin’ on a Prayer.
Releasing the two singles in tandem was a key element in their success, bypassing any discussion of them being a one-hit-wonder, from the get go.

But even though in hindsight we can see why it worked;
Let’s not forget that initially, many things did not!
Due to the cover of the Slippery When Wet album being changed, the release date was pushed forward, which effectively meant they went on tour without it.

Jon’s speeches in August’s Japanese tour, about the album being released on that day or around that time, suggest the name of the album having been changed for the Japanese market, but was it?
The cover for Japan is however the old one with the woman’s bust, and the pink edge.
And the release dates you can hear Jon saying in the 1986 Japanese concerts, do not exactly match up with what we now believe the release dates must have been.

In other words;
The release of the 1986 album, was a mess.
And subsequently the band’s tour had started on the wings of its release, but they could not benefit from the audience already knowing the new songs.

The first single, You Give Love a Bad Name, was released on 23rd of July 1986, so a month before the album.
But before I look into where exactly, it was released on this day – and if perhaps Europe was actually later – I think the polite applause in Mannheim 1986 after Jon Bon Jovi tells them the next song is You Give Love A Bad Name – “This is the song you’ve been hearing on the radio”-
tells all we need to know about how well that classic Bon Jovi song was known at the time;
It wasn’t.

So when Bon Jovi made their stop in Germany, on their way from the Japan leg of their tour to America, where they’d go next;
They did not have super star status at those two Monsters of Rock stages in Nurnberg on the 30th of August, nor Mannheim on the 31st.

Yet in the US?
Oh, that was a different story!
You Give Love A Bad Name was on a steady course to the top of the charts, and it was taking the album with it.
In fact the success in America was so quick and overwhelming, the critics in the press immediately disliked Bon Jovi and started writing the most unfavorable things about the band.

Nasty words they had to eat within 9 months, when the 500th edition of Rolling Stone Magazine featured Jon Bon Jovi on the cover!

They say David Bryan was the only one who clipped and kept the band-bashing review the magazine had done in 1986.
Because he knew Bon Jovi would not be held back.

But aside from those critics?
Bon Jovi was loved in the USA, unanimously. Although it didn’t skyrocket to number one right away, it was as if the album and the single had unleashed something, and every week it rose in the charts.
Late October 1986 the album was in pole position, where it would stay for 15 weeks.
And b
y the time Bon Jovi would return for their November/December European tour, the rest of the world was rapidly catching up.

But on 30 and 31 August?
No one knew what lay ahead.

So what we listen to, in Mannheim 1986 is not the Bon Jovi who knew they’d soon be holding the world in the palm of their hand.
And that their album would be the biggest selling rock album of the 80s.
No;
We’re listening to a band who is using the tricks, the format, and the road they have been paving for years!

They appeal to the Americans, stationed in Mannheim, by name-dropping New Jersey several times.
They play around with the German word for “cheers”, and turn it into a dedication for Thin Lizzy.

For their whole 50 minute set you hear them reaching out, leaning forward, and connecting to the German festival crowd;
Using the “my side your side” routine as well as Richie Sambora’s rousing electric guitar intros, both already present in the earliest shows.

You hear them musically bringing it, with their exceptional melodic and varied set, including using an acapella rendition, this time of the cover “I don’t want to go home”, as an introduction to their traditional main set closer “Get Ready”.
Mannheim 1986 had all the elements of a classic early Bon Jovi show, enhanced with songs of the new album.

In their last concert before knowing how big they’d be, Bon Jovi does not show us they are the biggest band in the world;
They show us why they became it.

Therefor:

31 August 1986, Mannheim, Monsters of Rock
Bon Jovi | Live at Maimarktgelände | Monsters of Rock | Mannheim 1986

Only concert ever in Bayreuth, Germany | Bon Jovi 1993 08 25 | New on YouTube

New on YouTube:

Bon Jovi
25 August 1993
Bayreuth, Germany🇩🇪
🏟️Keep the Faith Tour

🎛️🎶🎧->
https://youtu.be/Jy_SYC5EzsQ?si=gEEIiA1b8FrT-o-L

For those sensitive to rhythm, logic and symbolism, there is an irresistible rhythm, to the Keep the Faith Tour.
All dates were set within one calendar year, from the snow of Canada’s opening shows in February, all year and the globe around, and then ending as it had started;
With a Canadian Tour in November, December and wrapping up with their fourth annual Christmas concert in Redbank, in December 1993

Many countries hosted both a series of indoor concerts, as well as an open air leg in summer.
And one of those countries, was Germany.

So when Bon Jovi visited Bayreuth, a town North to Nuremberg, it was part of that summer leg of their Europe tour.
There were 7 (!) other Bon Jovi concerts in Germany, between 18 and 29th of August, and among them a concert at the Kanzlers Weide (a meadow) in Minden, which comes with the best story, of the band being stuck in the mud with their limousines.

But another legendary one was Bayreuth, because judging from the fact Bon Jovi only visited once, this means it wasn’t a regular venue for big concerts.
But we never had that concert! It was not on YouTube.
Until now.

“But is it any good?” I hear you wonder.
Fortunately, it is!
Retrieved and restored by YouTube channel hAnD90, it was made public this month.

Bon Jovi | Legendary Concert at Städtisches Stadion | 30th Anniversay | Bayreuth 1993

from the description box:
“What I like about these shows is the inclusion of the Beatles’s classic “Help!” and Jon’s attitude of adding massive additional lyrics to their In These Arms performances. “

Help! opens the encore, after what feels like an eternity of waiting for the band to return. Building up the tension, and making this piano-driven coversong like it came straight from the heavens. Not in the least due to their harmonies, and Richie Sambora stunningly delivering the second verse.

After Help! Richie Sambora continues to strike a chord, or a lot of them, because he gets to do his own guitar song;
An improv play that sounds particularly fresh and that is deeply intertwined with the cinematic Wanted; Dead or Alive, tonight.

Not two separate songs.

After Wanted they move into the two closers of what was supposed to be the only encore: 1. In These Arms and 2. Livin’ on a Prayer.

Before In These Arms Jon thanks the audience, on behalf of the band, of Billy Idol, and “Little Angels”, which was the actual band name of the second support act!
Not a creative way of referring to the rest of the band or the crew 😉

The outro to In These Arms seamlessly crosses over into an acapella intro to Livin’ on a Prayer.
And then the concert was supposed to be over, if it had not been for the band returning!
Probably because the German crowd does not yell “We want more”, but stick to German “Zugabe!”.
I think that did the trick.

The band returns and Jon asks if they don’t need to go home, and go to work tomorrow (just to be sure they want it!) and then says:
“Somebody bring us a pizza from back there I’m starving.”
Before their final song of the night kicks in: “This is for you my friends.”
It is indeed the cover song: With A Little Help From My Friends.

And there ends the only concert Bon Jovi ever gave in Bayreuth, Germany.
It was a night to remember, and now with an actual audio recording;
We can.

Madison Square Garden 1987 3rd night | Bon Jovi 1987 08 03 | New on YouTube

With still 2.5 months to go, and 13 months of touring under their belt;
Bon Jovi was still going strong.
But not without tear!

This recent upload by the hAnD90 channel, illustrates why there are those who will take any beat, piercing, 80s Bon Jovi audio, over what everyone would call the more professional, and stronger later tours.
This passion, this all-in-ness, this hellbent attitude of pushing through no matter what;
It still inspires the f* out of you, 36 years later!

Recording was unknown, until a few years ago it came in possession of hAnD90.
Just like crimes are sometimes not solved, until newer forensic techniques are developed, big breakthroughs in audio tech have lead to him being able to work on material which previously would have been impossible to clean up.
With the introduction of AI, we have seen many new uploads on the channel, which stayed in the drawer before.

But it’s still a rough one!
From the description box:
“Be aware that this combines the downsides of the era:
really poor acoustics, combined with Beatle-mania screaming from the audience and constantly changing sounds.”

So there’s your disclaimer.
But if you like your Bon Jovi rough and raw,
you are going to love this one!

Big Thank You to hAnD90 for his prolific work, as well as to Jane who diligently keeps an “On this day” archive on Twitter.
My presence in the Bon Jovi community really bottomed out this summer, and it took me a while to realize the inevitability of it!

Although I would never dare to compare my work to either one of you, engaging with the Bon Jovi material is part of me, just as it is part of you.
I know that now.

For many of us, it is so welcome to see you two so consistently carrying that flame all year around.

Thank you!

Yoga has started! Curator appointed and The Mighty These Days project will be reinstalled | full list 10 June – 5 Dec | Bon Jovi Concerts On This Day

This is one in the category:
I got good news and bad news.
What do you want to hear first?

Okay, good news first!
I’m picking up my Bon Jovi 1995 concert series.

{ unfinished 2020 project } Video Bon Jovi Concert Reviews 1995-1996

A playlist that will be needing an updated title! Because I am going to pick it up where I left off, and at a rate of doing one review per week, let it run through 2025.
At least one concert from April-June 1995, but perhaps more concerts, has become available, so that one too will be included in the new reviews.

I abandoned the project in 2021, because it took me about three hours to research a concert, make a video review, and then 90 minutes to upload, make a thumbnail, write the description box and post it.
And that’s not counting the number of times I had to listen or watch the concert, if there was video as well, before I could make a video about it.

But NOW? After months of writing reviews/ metas for a Bon Jovi Soundtrack of the Day and making a visual to go with it (4 hours per post + listening to the concert);

Or posting the slimmed down version of it which is a Bon Jovi  concert with the context readily available to me (still about 2 hours);

And NOW, when I had originally planned to make this my about sixth-ish weekly list of concerts + context, which take me about 8 hours (!) to adjust the playlist to having the current week on top, check all concerts if there are any new uploads available, and list out the 7 dates and their concerts for this blog;

Now?
I realize that the 4.5 hours to create a real video review, had been an absolute bargain!

And in particular now that I need to start having a very serious look at all my projects, because I have a business to run.

Ideally, I should cull my computer work to 2 hours a day.
So now, making one video review a week, about a concert from the mighty 1995 These Days tour, sounds like absolute, and heavenly, music to my ears!

So what I have done is I restored the playlist
“Part I: Bon Jovi concerts on this day 10 June and up (before 1997)”
to its original format:
Part I: Bon Jovi concerts on this day 10 June – 5 December (before 1997)
With no longer the current week at the top, but 5 December.

And my next steps are not to keep an eye out on the Bon Jovi concerts of the day, but to start implementing all the new uploads that have become available on the hAnD90 channel, the Santi Jovi channel, check the Fighter BJ channel if I got everything in there;
And many other channels which have been recommended to me, but which I never took the time to check out and structurally implement into our lists.

Another plan is to bundle dates at the same venue, so for example list the 3 nights in Wembley in one go.
F.e. “23+24+25 Jun 95 Wembley”
This is essential to create room in the description box, which is at its 5000 character capacity.
Recently hAnD90 has uploaded new shows, which were never before available on YouTube.
I need to find ways to cut characters, in order to be able to add them. By bundling consecutive nights, I can.

So a curator for these two lists has been installed;
Part I: Bon Jovi concerts on this day 10 June 5 December (before 1997)
Part II: Bon Jovi concerts on this day 6 Dec-9 June (before 1997)
Which is Me!

The lists will therefor remain active and alive, and will only get better over time.

The other good news is that I started sharing the 369 Catacombe program:
369 Days Catacombe Rock Star Yoga
These are 369 yoga videos, in the correct order to create a program taking you from beginner to master of the yoga mat!
In 369 days.

You can follow along at:
Twitter, Facebook, and I am new on Instagram.

And the bad news?
Well, that is of course that I will no longer be posting “Soundtrack of the day posts”, and will no longer be sending out these weekly lists of concerts.

Not because I don’t want to, but because like many of us, my normal job of being a yoga teacher and a coach, and doing the marketing for that business, will take 40 hours a week or more.

But we’ll soon be seeing each other on my YouTube, for the first new video review.
Which will be a revisit of Wembley first night, one of my last concert reviews in 2021 (video # 21 of the playlist).

Let’s see if I review “Wembley first night”, if I actually got any better at this reviewing thing after listening and writing about a hundred shows since then!
Subscribe to my YouTube or to this blog, and I’ll send it out to you when it’s done.

It is showtime.

Stop! Stop! Stop! | 11 June 1987 | Bon Jovi, Kemper Arena, Kansas City, Missouri

source newspaper https://www.concertarchives.org/concerts/bon-jovi-81181abb-7029-4fa2-a884-d315f5959045

The Soundtrack of the Day is:

Bon Jovi
11 June 1987
Kansas City, Missouri 🇺🇸
🏟️Slippery When Wet Tour

It wasn’t their first show in Kansas that year, but it would quickly become their most memorable one!

In the second song, I’d Die For You, the power shuts off, and Jon Bon Jovi – struggling with serious voice-issues on the tour- finishes the song acapella.
“You guys were so excited you blew out the electricity tonight, huh?”
he welcomes the crowd.
Adding that it will take a little bit more than that to blow his fuse!
And a little bit more, he certainly gets.

Referring to the Kansas concert they had given earlier that year, he asks if they have been keeping up with the newspapers, and the then brand new organization PMRC and others who claim rock n’ roll is devil’s music.
Jon ensures them they’re just aiming for a little bit of a smile, a big sweat and a good time.

The next song is You Give Love A Bad Name, which is halted by Jon when he sees a fight has broken out:
“Stop! Stop! Stop!”
Which stops the music, and I expect also the fans.

Jon addresses this is exactly the type of behavior why people say rock n’ roll is no good.
“How can we have a good time when you guys are hitting each other?”
He brings a victim on stage and asks “are you okay?”, before continuing the song.

The next song is Wild in the Streets, and after that Jon ascends flying over the crowd, playing a rare acoustic version of Twist and Shout, and Never Say Goodbye from a stage high up, in the back of the venue.

Mid Livin’ on a Prayer, the show is halted again as Jon tells the crowd that he’ll come back to sing in 15 minutes, unless they continue hurting themselves.

And back he comes!

With a nice apology, and a proposal to start over.
Get Ready kicks in, and the show steams through like nothing ever happened, including a FULL encore, ending with another apology, the cover Drift Away acapella and closing with Travelin’ Band together with the band Cinderella.

And whatever the devil had planned that night?
It had not come past Jon Bon Jovi.

👩🏼‍💻 Saturday night 17 June 2023

I did yoga with the show 11 June at the Kemper Arena!
1 hour 40 minutes in which I did schedule 14 + 1 from
https://suzannebeenackers.com/het-yogaboek-van-liefdeseend/
(Dutch)
+ relaxation during the encore.

I loved doing it, but in the 24 hours after, on Sunday, my life seemed to unfold in diabolical ways!
So whatever forces unleashed the chaos at the Kemper Arena?
They are still alive today.
